Today we had the Jammie awards. The Jammie awards are a pun on the Grammy Awards. We all one at least one award. I won two awards. One of them was the most improved hack sacker. The other was the best hiker on the hike. We all had to present acceptance speeches when we won an award. I just thanked my family and friends. The orchestra played when the acceptance speeches got to long. This only happened a few times. Overall, the Jammie awards were very fun.

I can’t believe today is the last day of Microcampus. This month has gone by so fast. Well, you know what they all say“ time flies when your’e having fun!” That is exactly what happened here at Microcampus. I remember vividly why I came her to Microcampus. I saw how all of my friends went and when they came back they told me all about it. I also watched the presentation that Mr.T gave to the school. That presentation and the information that my friends gave me was enough to make me want to go. My mom was so excited when I told her I wanted to go to Microcampus.

Today we all presented our Service Learning videos. This was at 3:00 PM in the TV room of the Linden Centre. My group ( Sarah, Daniel, and Vanessa) were so relieved to be finished with our work. We had skipped evening activity the day before and had been working all day today on this. All the videos were so much fun to watch. We learned three other elders stories. After service learning, we all were scheduled to go to Dali Old Town.

Today we finished our Inquiry Projects. It felt so good to finish it. I worked all morning and afternoon on it.In the morning I finished up my reflection and started writing my voice over script. In the afternoon, I finished my voice over and talked to Mr.T for a final review. After talking to him, I had to tweak a few things in my project. I finally finished it soon after that. The next step was uploading the project onto the webpage. It turns out the webpage was down at the time I was trying to upload it. I will upload the presentation tomorrow in the morning.

The whole day today consisted of Inquiry Work. In the morning when we were sapposed to be doing SAS Essentials, we had time to work on our project. At that time, I had an appointment with my service learning partner. We finished asking them questions. During WHIPPIT time in the afternoon my group and I started making our service learning video. We got most of it done. The rest of WHIPPIT time for me was spent working on my Inquiry Project. I wanted to spend a lot of time on it so I could get it done and have time for Mr.T to review it. I worked for 2 hours on my inquiry project.

I got to ask three questions. One of them was what is your chinese name. The rest of the questions, I couldn't make out what the question was. I just said what one of my groupmates told me to say. We set up an appointment for 9:00 AM tommorow morning. We will be leaving right after breakfast.

This morning I worked on my final inquiry project. I got a lot of work done. I am almost done with my project but I have not written my reflection. All the girls received a surprise right before dinner today. We learned that the guys left to Dali Old Town for a guys night out. We realized that we had to have a girls night in. We decided to watch High School Musical 3. All of us (especially Katherine) were singing along to all the songs. Some of my favorite songs are, Can I have this Dance and the Boys are Back. We had a musical night.

Before the dance, we had WHIPPIT time. We got to work on our final projects. It felt really akward to be working on them. I still feel as if we just got here yesterday. Later in the evening, we had the SUPMAC Dance. We originally thought that it was going to be a dance. It turned out that the speakers didn't work so we just hung out. Some of us played hacky sack. The rest of us were jamming out to music played by Grace and Jing Rong. They were playing the ukulele. We all sang along to the songs that they were playing. They played many Taylor Swift songs.

Today we found a service learning partner. Her name is Mrs.Zhao. She is the wife of Mr.Zhao( the security gaurd at YZR). We went to YZR and asked her questions on film. When we were filming, her husband Mr.Zhao was also answering the questions. The good thing was that Mrs.Zhao answered them as well. We felt so accomplished after we got her on film. We had an original service learning partner but we learned on Tuesday that she had passed away.We were in a rush to find a new partner because we had to have our first filming on Thursday. We finally did it.

Today after I finsihed my Phase 3, I played hacky sack with Henry, Grace, Taylor F., and Bryce. I joined in the middle of the game. It turned out that I could do some of the advanced moves. For example,  Henry hacked the ball to me and I unknowingly preformed the front ski slope. The front ski slope is when you stick one of your legs out at an angle and the ball slides down your leg and onto your foot. Everyone stared at me after I did it. I did not even know that I did it. A few minutes later, I preformed the side ski slope. Bryce passed the ball to me but I caught it with my elbow.

I have noticed in Xizhou that there are not many full families walking around. The families that I see either have one or two children. There are two reasons that would explain why this is. One, the one child policy in China. The one child policy states that people in China may only have only child. The Chinese government created this policy to keep under control the overgrowing population of China. Over the past few years, the Chinese government has noticed that there are not enough young people to take care of the elders.

I woke up this morning really tired. My muscles still ached from the hike. I knew that I had to get up though. Today we continued with our regular schedule. We had SAS essentials in the morning. I worked on my IXL for math. For WHIPPIT time today I got to interview two people. I interviewed the owner of Mr. Lee’s restaurant and the owner of Old Town Snacks. They were really helpful. Since I narrowed down my topic to Vegetable use in Xizhou, I have found it kind of hard to figure out what kind of questions to ask. I have asked different questions to every person I interview.

I felt great to be back at the Linden Centre this afternoon. I was officialy done with hiking! We finished hiking around 3:30PM but we had to walk down a LONG road down to where the bus was. I was so exhausted by the time we got to the bus. When I sat down and put my hiking backpack on my lap I felt as if I had lost 5 pounds! My back felt so much more confortable without the hiking bag on. When we got back to the Linden Centre, all of us wanted to go lay in our bed. Tonight was going to be a chill night.

Today we reached the top of the mountain. The two hard days of hiking around 10 hours paied of. The view was amazing at the top. We could see how much we had hiked up. I felt phenominal. The next part was the easy part. All we would be doing is hiking down the mountain. I was wrong. I slipped around 10 times on the way down. I even bruised myself. My advice to the next group would be to use their walking sticks. The times I slipped were when I put my hiking stick in the wrong place. The ground was not solid and I slipped down.

Today was the first day of the three day hike. I was SO nervous. I have not hiked much before. Today was really hard. We were hiking mostly straight up so it was really tiering. There was also many rocks so we had to climb either around them or in front of them. At one point I was so exhausted that I felt as if I was going to vomit. Luckily, I had the rest of my group to keep me going. They kept telling me that I could do it. Once we finished the rocky section we hiked on flat land called the Jade belt. It was much easier than the rocks before.

I was originally going to interview Mr.Yang but he was busy with delivering wine to a customer. Mrs.Dong told me all about Xizhou cuisine. She told me how to make a pork sausage. It was really fun and she was very helpful. In the evening we started watching Mr.Popper's Penguins. I had watched that movie a while ago but I forgot what it was about. It was a really funny movie.

The strangest thing happened today while Grace, Peyton and I were walking to lunch. We were walking down the road by the Linden Centre when we walked by a horse cart. Peyton was the closest to the horse. Although Peyton kept a distance with the horse, the horse stepped over and bit him! He said that it was just was a scratch and that he was not hurt. We walked with him back to the Linden Centre and then Grace and I walked to lunch wondering why it bit him. We finally decided that Peyton invaded the horse's personal space. The rest of the day went on normally.

Today we rode back from camping at Erhai Lake peninsula. For breakfast today I finally tried the noodles that everyone was talking about. They were really good. They were so warm so it made me feel so good inside. We then finished up our wellness reflection and then we started to do our laundry. We were the last room to do laundry! We had so much to do. While we waited for our laundry to finish we went to the baba festival. I got to make my own baba. I put in M&M’s, bananas, and brown sugar. I tasted SOOOO good.

Today I went to a traditional Chinese New Year dinner celebration. Jing Rong and I are studying cuisine so we were invited to this event. We rode to the house by horse cart. The horse that drove our cart was named ping guo or apple. This was ironic because the horse was a boy. Once we got to the house I was so excited. We went inside and saw the huge amounts of food surrounding me. There were 8 dishes. Most of them were spicy. When we sat down to eat I was amazed by how many people were around me. There were hundreds of people there. The food was delicious.

Today was Chinese New Year. There were a bunch of fireworks going on today. Grace said that she kept waking up every four hours last night because of the fireworks. My other roommate Taylor and I slept soundly. After SAS essentials today, we all went to Sifangjie to see the new years festivities. There were a bunch of bands playing all around the area. It was such a cool sight. The music sounded so different from the music that I am used to listening to. It sounded more old and rustic I felt like I was in an old movie.

Today was the first day that we got to interact with the locals. We had to sign up with a chaperone to go talk to a certain person. I wanted to talk to Mr.Yang the owner of the Golden Flower .When we got there, he said that he was busy and that he couldn't talk to us. We finally decided to talk to Mrs.Ma, the wife of Mr.Yang the antique shop owner. She was very sweet and helpful. After we finished interviewing her, she said that we could come by anytime if we had any more questions. It felt really great after I interviewed her. I felt as if I overcame an obstacle.

The day started of with SAS essentials. I was working on my math work with Grace. Next, we had Pitching In. In the last 30 minutes of Pitching In, I went to the morning market with Grace,Taylor.F and Mrs.Mai. We went exploring. We talked to a lady who sold local cheese. She gave us a little piece to try. It was so good. We also bought three oranges. They were really lumpy on the outside so I was scared to eat them at first but when I tried it it tasted just like a regular orange. My whole afternoon consisted of a 2 hour bike ride and inquiry time. The 2 hour bike ride was so fun.

Life in Xizhou is nothing like life in The Giver. In The Giver, your life is controlled by the house of elders. The people are given no choices on what they want to do. For example, the house of elders gets to pick witch job suits them most. In Xizhou, people can either choose the job they want or continue in a family business.  Another example would be that people in The Giver are told how many people they can have in their so called “ Family Unit.” You may have two children. One male and one female. You may not have any more.

Today started of with SAS essentials. I got to work on my math work with Grace. We got a lot acomplished. Next we got split in half. Half of us went to Earhai and the other half of us got to paint a wall by the Linden Centre. I stayed and painted the wall. It felt really great to help the community. A bunch of the girls were having paint fights with each other. Everyone had paint on them. For dinner we went to the town center of Xizhou. I got Xizhou baba. It was delicious. It had spring onions and meat.  Finally, in the evening we got to look at the stars from the terrace.

Today we had a tour of Xizhou. First we walked to the town center of Xizhou. We looked at all of the restaurants. Next we walked to a local bank and exchanged our 100 kuai for change. It was a fun activity. We had to talk to each other and figure out what exactly we had to ask to get change back. By the time it was my turn, I didn't have to ask anything because the teller had already had a bunch of other people ask for change. I just gave him the money and he gave me change back! After we finished our tour, we went back to the town center and had lunch with our work groups.

I had to then sit through a 3 hour flight. After that we got to sit through another SEVEN hour bus ride. When we finally arrived in Xizhou I was so happy.
