Imani R. (Alumni-R)'s Journal

There were many reasons why I came to Microcampus. I was so interested in the experience and I wanted to have a chance to experience something like this. This program gives students an opportunity to experience real China outside of the Shanghai "bubble". The students have a chance to learn about ourselves and our project of high interest.

We are coming home soon. I can not wait to see my family and friends again. I miss them and wonder how they have been doing lately. Today we already had our meeting with Mr. T about our Service Learning video. I was right, we did get a lot of correction, but none of which are too difficult to fix. We need to fix those mistakes and show Mr. T before lunch today. After lunch we are going to show what Mr.

I can not believe it is already 24 day at Microcampus. We only have a few days left before we go back to Shanghai. We need to remember to not count the days, but to make the days count. Today we started doing our Service Learning video. We put it all together and then we have to go have a meeting with Mr. T to see how we can make the video better. There is probably a lot that every group can work on, so I hope that we can get it all done.

Today we are going to work on our Service Learning Projects. We are creating our story boards and those are what we use to show Mr. T what the flow of our actual finished product will be. We already finished half of the story board. What we have to do now is look at the videos that we took of our partner and translate the questions, then put those questions in the story board.

I can't believe that the trip is almost over. Today I have a lot less stress because I have finished my Inquiry Project and I am going with Mr. T at 5:15 so that he can look over it and give me some pearls of wisdom. Hopefully the meeting goes well. I took almost all day today to finish the video and reflection.

Wow, only a little bit left of Microcampus. I can't believe it. It has flown by so fast. Today we are working on our final products for Inquiry Projects. Today we have to start and finish our videos for our project that we will be showing everyone. This video includes, our introduction, thesis statement, 3 hooks and a conclusion.

Today is day 20. Only a little bit left of Microcampus and it has flown by. I am stressed out a little bit for the upcoming few days because we have a lot to do. I have managed to get Phase 3 and Phase 4 done on time and hope that is the case for the rest of my work here in XiZhou.

Wow! Today is already day 19 at Microcampus. Time has flown. I just finished my Phase 4 a little bit ago. It took a full 2 hours to do and now my fingers are tired of typing. My brain also hurt, but it was good to get it over with and know how I am going to do my final project.

I can't believe that it is already day 18. The trip has gone by so fast and I am sad we only have a little bit of the trip left. Today we went out as a Service Learning group to find a service learning partner. We found out that our other Service Learning partner had already been one. He must not have understood when we asked him if he had already been one. Today we are on a search to find another Service Learning partner.

Today is day 17 at Microcampus. The past few days have been pretty good. We have been following directions and working well together. After our daily meeting today, we had pitching in. Most of us finished our work and did what we needed to do. All of a sudden, I heard the "phantom room inspector" calling out about how there might be a room inspection. My room was already really clean as it was, but we did some last minute touch ups with beds and made our clothes look super neat.

Today is day 16 at Microcampus. I can't believe that we only have once more weekend after today and then we go home the week after. The experience so far has been amazing and we have learned so many things as a group and as individuals. We have changed a lot and have learned to work together.

Today is day 15. We have a lot of free time today. I am going to go take a picture of a tapestry that I like and probably buy it. I am going to show the picture to Ms. Pam and see if she can make some pillows that match the tapestry. If she can't, then I have some pillows that I want to buy from her. Today I am also going to go on an adventure. Some of us, not really sure who, are going to go on a bike ride. I am excited for my plans that I have for the afternoon.

Today is day 14. We are half way done with the trip and the second week has gone by very fast. This week we had a lot of time for Inquiry Project work. We are ending a pretty tough week. We have improved this week from the bad times and we have been using our plan to make sure that we follow the expectations. I am excited to see what we have in store for the next half of the trip. This morning we had hangers and hooks.

Day 13. Microcampus has its ups and downs for all groups, not matter what. At this stage usually a few people are falling short of the expectations and need to be nagged along. For us, the Revival Group, that is not the case. Many of the students are falling short of the clear expectations given by Mr. T and Ms. Mai. We are failing to work together as a group to get the job done. Not supporting the others to keep up and to do what they need to do is definitely something that we have not been doing.

Today is day twelve at Microcampus. Today was a pretty chill day on behalf of the schedule. I had Inquiry Project, Wellness, Still Time and Pitching In. During Inquiry work today I talked to two different people. I have already talked to one of them and I got to meet a new person named Ms. Liu. We talked about tie-dye and some basic facts.

Today is day 11 at Microcampus. So far it has been great. The past few days have been good. We have been working together more and have been following directions more. We haven't had any lectures in the past few days, but we have been reminded about doing our revision logs at the end of the days work. I will definitely work on this and make sure that all parts of the process are done. Today has been a pretty chill day. I made my daily video shout out with Hillary.

Today is day 10! The trip so far has had ups and downs. We have made some mistakes in the past that we can learn from. The past few days, we have been working together more and have learned from our mistakes. Today was a pretty good day. I went to the bank with Anne-Marie, but the line was super long. We couldn't get back in time if we waited in the line, so we went next door and asked if they could give us some change for a hundred Yuan bill.

Today is Sunday. It is our first weekend in XiZhou besides when we first got here. The first week went by really slowly. It was nice to get used to the schedule. Now we really have to focus and we must do our work all the time. So far we have gotten quite a bit of reminders for following directions the first time. We need to give each other helpful reminders about phones, volume on stairs, and having all the things we need at certain times. I am hoping that we work together and make sure that we all aim 10 feet high.

Day 8! I can't believe that it is already day 8. Some parts of me think that it has been forever and some parts of me feel as if the journey has just begun. I am enjoying it so far. Today was our first actual weekend. It was very different from the week days because we weren't as busy. We did have SAS essentials today and we had no daily meeting. Yesterday on the bus ride home we had a mini meeting though, where we explained some things for everyone to keep in mind.

Today is day seven of Micrcampus. Today we had a different schedule because of our half day field trip. Instead of having the normal WIPPIS schedule, which is wellness, inquiry project, pitching in and still time, we just had Inquiry Project. I didn't sign up for teacher support today which probably wasn't the best idea.

This is day 6 at Microcampus. I am loving it so far. I miss my family and friends that are back in Shanghai. I haven't gotten a chance to really have a long conversation with my friends, so I will try to catch up and see how they are doing. I have talked to my parents everyday so far and I miss them too. They are doing well. The experience on Microcampus is one in a life time and I still can't believe that I have this amazing opportunity.

This is our fifth day at Microcampus. So far I have really enjoyed the experience. I have met some locals and I can't wait to meet more while working on my inquiry project. When doing my inquiry project work today I was talking to a lady named Ms.Yang. I could only talk to her for a little bit because of time constraint, but she invited me to her shop to make tie-dye. I am really excited about going back and happy that I get a chance to learn more about her and the process of making tie-dye.

Today was our first day on Microcampus following our normal schedule. Today was different from the previous days on Microcampus because we did things very differently. We had breakfast at the same time and then we had our math test. The test for a lot of people was difficult and we probably would've been better off taking it back in Shanghai because we didn't get to study too much yesterday. There were certain parts of the test that were definitely easier than others, but we all tried our best.

This was our third day on Microcampus. The highlight of today was our bike ride to get our biking license. This experience was really cool because we got to bike to so many different villages around XiZhou and got the chance to connect with the locals at each of them. While biking around we had to keep in mind four things which were spacing, avoidance, focus and effective communication. These four things helped us stay S.A.F.E. and all of us came back in one piece which is awesome.

Today was our first full day on Microcampus. I already love the food, community and my new home for the 28 days that I will be in XiZhou. The highlight for today was definitely getting a tour of our house, Yang Zhuo Ran, and the village that we are staying at. Another important place is the Linden Centre. Also, connecting with the locals was amazing. In the morning we woke up and had breakfast and then we got our tours.

Today I woke up at 4:30 to head to the airport and start an amazing journey. The plane ride was only 3 hours and 30 minutes but it seemed liked forever. I sat on the plane waiting for us to land and we finally did. We had lunch at the airport and then had a 45 minute bus ride to the village that we are staying at. I was so nervous to finally figure out where my home would be for a month. We arrived at the village and it was nothing that I thought it would be.

Hi, my name is Imani. I am 13 years old and this is my 2nd year at SAS. I was born in Michigan and I lived there my whole life until I moved to China 3 years ago. Some of the passions I have are playing soccer, dancing and traveling to many places around the world. One of my favorite places to go is Thailand. I was part of the Revival Microcampus group. I went to Microcampus on November 19, 2016 along with 9 other students from the Shanghai American School Pudong Campus. I enjoyed my time in XiZhou and learned many things about myself and the community that I was living in during the experience. This is definitely an experience to remember and I have nothing to regret by deciding to go on the trip. Thank you XiZhou and everyone who makes Microcampus possible for the chance of a lifetime. Definitely something that I will never forget.
