Our Service Learning partner is Mrs.Deng she is 73 years old and she makes shoes near Si Fang Jie. Throughout this experience, I have learned so much about my partner. She told us about her childhood and about the Cultural Revolution. She told us about the hard times that she had to live through and how they made her a better person today. She was born in Lijiang. She moved to XiZhou when she was 25 years old.

I learned what she did when she was little and she had to climb a mountain at 4AM every day. She also did not have much clothing or food when she was younger. I also learned that her life is much better now.

In result of this experience, I learned about the history of Lijiang because that is where she was born. She does not know much about the history of Xizhou because she moved here when she was 25.

I learned that the 20th century for people was very difficult and that their lives are much better now. I learned that many people had to work very hard even at the young age. I learned that many people who were young at the time did not have a great education.

After watching all of our Service Learning partners watch our videos I have a new understanding of who they are as a person. While I was waiting to present our video I was able to watch the other kid's videos. I saw how their partners reacted to some of the questions. It made me really upset that these people have lost their families. They are alone. Somehow they are still positive. This made me curious as to how someone who has gone through so much can be so positive.

When it was my group's turn to present our video I was able to see their reactions. I mostly saw them talking to each other or laughing. Occasionally though I would see someone brush their cheeks with their hands or sigh. I realized that they have all been through similar things but they are still happy and positive. I hope that some day I will be just as positive as my Service Learning partner, Mrs. Deng.

Some recommendations I have for future Microcampus students who will be doing a Service Learning project are to not approach this as an easy task. Students must work hard and stay focused in order to have a successful project. I would also recommend to not waste time on things that are not necessary. My final recommendation is to support the rest of your group and make sure that one person does not do all of the work. Because of the language barrier one person will have to do most of the work, but others can still help with other things.

About This Learner

Hi, I'm Lexi and I am 14 years old. I was born in Royal Oak, Michigan. My family moved to Wisconsin when I was five. Last year, I moved to California. This summer, I moved to Shanghai. I have lived in three different states and two countries. I am so glad that I was able to spend 27 days in Xizhou. I learned so much. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I was on the Revival Group for Microcampus. My group left Shanghai on November 19 for XiZhou. This experience was simply a life changer. I will never forget what I have learned on that trip.
