Ben S. (Alumni-F)'s Journal

Today was a sad day, getting things all good to go, as well as packing. I read through the checklist, and then followed through. Other than the checklist, everything was, well, same, although with a different atmosphere. Everybody were taking pictures around the center, as well as telling the villagers that we would be leaving tomorrow.

Day 28 is the last day. Today, I will be writing about why I came to Microcampus. First of all, my intentions for going to Microcampus was a bit incorrect at first. I thought it would be fun to be living together with some of my friends for 28 days, however, Graham, an alumni told me that that should not be the reason why I came. So, the reasons that I had decided to go to Microcampus afterwards were different. I came to Microcampus, because I knew that it would be a very fun and productive experience.

Today was a very tiring and productive day. We had a service learning presentation today, and it was very interesting to watch other group's product, as well as feeling very accomplished by showing my group's. Me, Daniel and Apoorva however, had to stay at the Linden Center instead of going to Dali Old Town because we didn't catch up with out work.

Today was the due date for the final product. I just started working on the product, and wrote a script for the presentation, which was Mr. T's suggestion. I had kept on working and editing, and then asked Mr. T to look over. I decided that the presentation was pretty useless since all it had were bullet points, so I decided to upload the script instead. Today was pretty tiring.

Today was a good day to just work, as well as relaxing. It was raining all day, so it wasn't very great for me to be moving around and being active that much. After breakfast, I took the math quiz, and afterwards started doing my inquiry project. I started getting stuff done, because of the alarming sense that the day after was the date that I needed it finished. After lunch, I then worked again, and then snooped around, knowing that I was kind of good to go.

Today, I woke up and headed for breakfast. The girls were almost going crazy because they wanted to know what we did during bro's night out. After a while of just walking around with all the guys, we all decided to just relax and do whatever we wanted, so I just played with my rubik's cube and read. After lunch, I decided to just work on my final product, and I felt really good about how I didn't have to hurry and feel anxious. Today was a very nice day, with sun shining.

Today, me, Brandon and Peyton had to move to another room since our original one needed the floor to be replaced. While Peyton and Brandon were doing the laundry, I moved everything to the new room. Although it was bothersome, the room is very nice and big, so I think it was worth the moving. It might be a bit of an inconvenience for Mr. T and Ms. Mai, since our room is right next to them, and I sleep talk, which might wake them up. Afterwards, before dinner, all the guys went out to have a Bro's Night Out, and hung out then came back.

Today, some of the evening activity committee had planned on a dance party starting at 7. However, their amp didn't work so there were no music, but me, Daniel and Bryce didn't plan on going and so instead, just played hackey sack for about an hour. Bryce had planned on just working on economic crysis, but me and Daniel followed him to try to help, but later on digressed to music and games. We just listened to music and browsed until around 9, and then Daniel left to his room, followed by me after few minutes.

Today, I went around the village for our service learning. Although everybody had said no, we then started talking to Ms. Hong, a women living near the center. Afterwards, we all had finished our Phase 3 and started working on Phase 4. Mr. T basically explained to us about what we have to do for Phase 4 and also about the final Product. I had concentrated and finished Phase 4 by around 5, and then we started off for dinner. I was very, very happy that I had caught up and also had finished ahead.

Today, like any other day, was very normal. I had finished my Phase 3, and so I just relaxed for a while. At around 5, we all met and went to Dali Old Town to eat dinner. We decided to go eat pizza, but didn't find the legendary restaurant that Mr. T was talking about. Instead, we went to another pizza restaurant which was overpriced and small. We saw different shops like music shops and a poncho shop. We also went to a bakery which was famous for brownies but were out of stock. I returned back at around 8.

Today was normal like anyday, and the weather was nice and sunny, although it was a little bit chilly. I interviewed with Mr. Dong the elder, and also Mr. Yang the barber about their own beliefs. I then returned to the center. After dinner, me, Henry and Bryce started playing pool and ping pong, and then went to the second courtyard, where Mr. Zhang and Mr. Zhao was playing instruments. Afterwards, I returned to bed and slept.

Today, I have started appreciating the center so much. Hot shower, beds, heaters... Everything was just. so. amazing. After breakfast, we started our SAS essentials, and I got really excited when I heard that I got a 100% for my math quiz. Afterwards, I just went around interviewing and collecting information for my project, and did bunch of other things, although I was just a little bit tired from the hike. I am so glad to be back at the center.

Today, I woke up at the tent, at around 7am. I decided to sleep in. I grabbed some breakfast, and then packed my lunch, which was corn and muffins. Then, we set off to go back to the village. At first, it was a nice road, but it got rough later on. After on, I did feel tired, but I felt so nice when I got on the bus. Later on, we just had down time until dinner, and then rested for the rest of the day. It was so good to be back to the linden center.

Today, I woke up, went by the temple and got my breakfast. We had a dough and also had some side dishes like tomatoes with eggs. When we started hiking, I was so relieved, since I didn't have to carry our heavy backpacks. We then started off, with our light backpack only with lunch and water. We went up qutie high, around 3200 kilometers above sea level, and we could also hike a bit farther up. Me and some other guys went up, and although the view was amazing, we ran out of time so we couldn't reach the peak, which was dissapointing.

Today, I woke up at seven, and ate breakfast. We all got ready, filled up our water bottle and brought our bags to the main courtyard. We rode a bus, and then started hiking, hiking and hiking for around 6 hours. It was tiring, but the lunch we packed tasted so good, since we were extremely tired. After we reached the area, we set up our tents and put all of our things there, and ate dinner at a restaurant. After eating, some of us sat down together and played cards, and talked. We went back to our tents at around 8:30 and slept.

Today started off very normally. I woke up at morning, pitched in, ate lunch, and did WIPPIT. Right after dinner, we all met up at the terrace and Mr. T started explaining all the things that we needed for the hike, and also talked a little bit about it. As soon as he finished, me and my roommates started packing our things, and also chatted about who would share the tent with whom. It wasn't too hard, but I kind of had to browse through the room to find some things. I was very excited.

Today will be my entry for humanities.

The village doesn't seem too similar to the book The Giver. The community seemed quite normal, the family roles being quite ordinary. The only thing that might be more out of the ordinary is probably that they are always nice and kind and more of a community. Also, I have also thought about the "blindness" in the book. The places around look very nice, but I think the people have seen the same thing over and over again.

Today started very normally. I woke up at seven, ate breakfast, did my SAS essentials. However, when it was lunch, me and Daniel started off to lunch to the square. When I was about to go out of the center, I saw Petyon, Apoorva and Grace return. I asked what happened, and they said that Peyton had gotten bit by a horse on the chest. Me and Daniel started laughing, and once we were at the square, Peyton had come to the restaurant that we were at, and so we tried to order something, but there were too much customers, and so Peyton and to go to a different restaurant.

Today, I woke up, finding myself at a tent, quite cozy. As I stepped out, I could see the beautiful sunrise of Erhai. Shortly after, I had dismantled my tent that took a long while to build, and we all biked our way back. Upon arriving, I ate a bit of breakfast and had free time, where I just spent that time working on things and also just relaxing. During lunch, I went to the square where the baba festival took place, and I got to make one. Shortly after, I returned and played some pool and ping pong at the game room, and went to the gym and to the punching bag.

Today had started very nicely. Since it was the weekends, I could sleep in and so I woke up at around 8am. I started by going to the dining room and eating breakfast, and then I could do whatever I wanted. I worked on my inquiry project and also wrote my journals, and then I just played some pool with my friends. Soon after, we also saw the dragon dancers at the main courtyard, which was pretty fun, although I think it should have taken place yesterday at Chinese New Year. After lunch, Mr.

Today was very tiring. We all rode a bus to a nearby mosque, where we watched the Muslims do their lunch prayers. Afterwards, we had hiked for three hours, and it was straight up tiring. During the hike, I was able to see some tombs, and I was told that Muslims had faced towards the Mecca, and it showed the day it was rebuilt, the date of death and their role as family. Also, as I was coming back, we all said happy new year to each other, and the villagers. It was tiring, but it was fun.

Today was just a regular day. I just did my normal things like do laundry, which took around three hours, inquiry project, journals etc. However, at night, naturally because of the fact that it was the Chinese new years eve, there were a lot of firecrackers and fireworks that had been set off. Me and some of my friends went near the square and watched them, and I could see so much people there setting it off. It was pretty cool, but one thing was that it was pretty loud, and I couldn't find the ear plugs, so I had a bit of a trouble sleeping.

Today, I had a lot of fun. We had a normal day, starting out with breakfast, essentials and the meeting. During WIPPIT time, we all rode our bikes, following Mr. T to different areas like Erhai and different villages. The areas and the landscape were amazing, and so it was a lot of fun. Afterwards, we basically had a normal day for the rest of the time. I don't really like biking, and I'd rather choose to go to the gym and on to the punching bag, but it was fun and I will do it for wellness time over time.

Today was pretty amazing. We woke up at 7, but we did have some trouble getting to the dining room by 7:30. After the breakfast, we took a walk around the village where we took looks at different places and people. Afterwars, we ate lunch at the village itself, where I ate a dough with meat and vegetables in it, which was pretty tasty. I had some time left, so I took a walk around with one of my buddies, where I visited the antique shop owned by a Hui minority, and I had found out they were Muslim. I also visited the jewlery shop, and it was weird how he knew I was Korean.

Today was amazing. The day started off pretty nice and sunny, but still no "crisp" shadows. I woke up at around 6:45 with my dubstep music alarm on. After eating breakfast, I painted the walls near the center, which was very frustrating, since it took forever to get the walls all nice and painted white. During the time, Apoorva, Henry and Vivian were being meanies and painted me all white. After I cleaned myself, we all were introduced to our bikes and our heart rate, then ate out at the village for dinner. After when we came back, the stars were shining, so Mr.

Today was awesome! The only thing that sucked was the fact that I had to wake up at around 4 am in the morning to go to Hongqiao airport, ride the plane for around 3 hours, then take a bus ride that took twice as long. We are dinner, unpacked and met the staffs and so I'm pretty pumped up for this whole thing. I might be homesick halfway, but I could always call my parents at night, and I'm probably gonna settle myself down at the Linden center, and I'm gonna miss that when I get back home. Now, I am really tired after doing all sorts of things, so I'll get to sleep in a second.

Hi, I'm 13 years old, just like most of the other 8th graders who went on this trip. Rubik's cube is my everything, I'm an atheist, and I'm Korean. Although I have been living in China for more than four years, I live in areas with lots of foreigners, so my Chinese haven't really improved, but I can speak with locals. I was in Xizhou, and it was so amazing!
