Daniel S. (Alumni-F)'s Journal

When I came to Microcampus, I came with the idea that it was going to very easy. I was completely wrong with that. Microcampus was probably the hardest, but best thing that has ever happened to me. I learned so much about Bai Minority Music. I not only learned a lot about music, but I also learned a lot about life and myself.

I cannot believe how fast time has passed. I remember just leaving from the airport and saying goodbye to my family. Now I have to say I'm home. Actually, Xizhou was and will always be a home for me. I just felt great being here in Xizhou, and I will miss all my new friends that I made here, especially my man Bryce. I do not know how we even became friends, but it was just awesome getting to know him. I do not know why, but for some reason, he feels like a brother to me.

This might sound a little weird, but today I worked my butt off. I had a quiz in the morning, then I left to go for service learning, then I came back, and worked and worked. Oh, and it also rained during the day, but that did not stop me from playing some hacky sack with my man Bryce! We played in the rain, and it was just awesome! We had so much fun "schliping" and "schliding" (slipping and sliding). I just had so much fun today, as I worked too.

Today has been one of the calmest days I have ever had in my life. To the point where I just wanted to work on my inquiry project, and I did. I just worked, but I felt amazing while doing so and it was just awesome. I actually just had so much fun working, and I felt like I got a lot done. I really do not understand what this feeling is, but I wish I had this feeling a lot more. I'm sorry, but today, I seriously do not have anything else to report.

So today was an ordinary day for me. Well, it is not the same as the ordinary days back in Shanghai, or anywhere else. In Shanghai, I would usually wake up and get ready for school, as for here it is wake up, be early to breakfast, and after that, you are on your own. We would have pitching in right after breakfast, so that means clean your rooms, clean other places, and make sure to catch up on work or journals.

Today is February 14, and for those who do not know, it is the wonderful day of Valentines Day! The Evening Committee, the people who plan the activity for the evening, planned out a dance, similar to the one that was happening back in Shanghai. Turns out the amplifiers did not work and the party just ended up becoming hacky sacking, playing and singing songs, and just chilling, which was not bad. I just had a lot of fun while all the girls were singing, and by the way, all of the girls are amazing at singing.

Dali Old Town was just a great way to end off the hard working time of phase 3. We all went to Dali and we got the freedom to walk around with 3-4 people. Before that, Taylor and I went to see Mr. Zhang, the instrument maker. Today, we watched him create the head of the dragon, which was amazing and just awesome. While Taylor and I thought the head was perfect, he said that it was nothing close to perfect. After an hour, we were picked up and we went to Dali. Dali Old Town was full of vendors and restaurants. Plus, Mr.

Last night, we had two wonderful members of the Dongjing band come to the Linden Center, Zhao laoshi and Zhang laoshi. I learned so much about them and the music, which is the side I am focusing on for my final product. I want to tell their story and how they grew up to become who they are. They both played so beautifully and perfectly. I learned that the music is very creative and awesome. I really like this one song that was about bumble bees and how they would come to the hive and live.

We have just been through a hard three days, and now it is time to get back into the habit of being clean, organized, disciplined, and working hard. I just feel a little weird, and I think that is ok, because we have transitioned from having to be physical all day for three days, to getting back to work. I do not know if this sounds weird, but I feel like the hike never happened. Those three days passed by as if they were just seconds and I missed them.

Today was the last day of our three day hike. I just do not know what to say about it. This experience was just magnificent and amazing. The view was breathtaking and so beautiful! My eyes have never seen such an amazing and clear view like that ever before, and I loved it! This time, it was a little bit harder. We all had to go down the mountain instead of going up, but that did not stop me from having a lot of fun. I remember what Mr.

Lets just say, that group F went higher than all the other Microcampus groups, and I was so blessed to be one of the 5 members to go. I have never felt so free and full of joy when we were hiking, This time, we did not have our hiking bags, just our small bags that only had out water bottles and our lunch. I can just remember seeing all the land, while feeling the magical forces of nature. The winds were pushing you from all direction, and I loved that so much.

If you do not already know, each week, for three weeks, I have to write an entry for my humanities class. The entry has to do with the book we just read, The Giver by Lois Lowry. Our task is to compare The Giver  with Xizhou.

I learned so much about myself on Trivia Night. I did not know that I knew so much about people and places. I was on a role! It was one of the best trivia games I have ever played in my life. I also learned a lot, for example, What was the name of the famous bird cartoon that Walter Lantz created? The answer is Woody the woodpecker! My group, thanks to me, was the only group who answered that question correctly. Everyone else guessed Tweety bird, but if they knew, Tweety was created by Bob Clampett.

Today, I learned so much about genetics. I also learned a lot about Mr. Tafel these past couple days. He used to be a science teacher, and I bet he was a great teacher. Actually, he still is a great teacher, because each day, here in Microcampus, I am not only learning a lot about genetics and math and how to put up  tent, but I am also learning a lot about life. He has taught me that the world does not revolve around me and everything will be given to me.

How do I begin to explain my day? Today  to me was a "normal" day of microcampus, but the one thing that made me wonder the most would have to be when I went to the terrace for an hour just by myself at night. Have you ever looked up into the stars and wondered to yourself, "Who am I?" That one question is the question that always leaves me thinking. How did life start? How did I come to this world? The world is just a magical place, and many of us are just taking it for granted and we are not enjoying the ride.

Today, with the help of the Linden Center, Xizhou had it's very first Baba festival, and to make it sound even better, it is the first Baba festival in the world. The thing that I loved the most was the dance performances. I find it very interesting seeing the different styles of dancing, like when i compare Latin dancing to Bai Minority Dancing.

We all went camping today and it was spectacular! It truly brought me back to when I was little. I would love to go camping and this was just crazy. We all had to bring all of our hiking bags and the tents, which I volunteered to bring, and we rode to our camp site. Once we arrived, we learned how to set up the tents. To tell you the truth, that was super hard! The tents where flying all over the place and we had to move three times.

Today was just a full day. A lot of us woke up around 6:30 a.m. to watch the ISS (International Space Station) fly right over us! I have never seen that before in my life, and It was just amazing. Later that day, around 12:30, there was a huge festival in Xizhou. There were dragon dances, Bai Minority dances, dragon dances, and firecrackers all over the place and it was just awesome.

Today was just amazing. For me, it was the best Chinese New Year ever! Just imagine watching over most of the villages in Xizhou. You could see a couple fireworks coming out of the villages, which was truly amazing! It was not only fireworks, but some firecrackers, sparklers, and many other creative Chinese fireworks. After we watched the fireworks on the terrace, Ms. Mai and a couple students, including me, went to Sifangjie and watched the people light firecrackers and sparklers.

Yesterday was an amazing day. I had so much fun riding the Bikes down to Erhai and seeing the old Microcampus Camp Site. I really love the view, but something that I thought was the best moment ever was at night. I was all alone on the terrace while my fellow students were singing to songs, working on their inquiry projects, or watching the movie Frozen. Do you want to build a snowman? As for I, the night was so quite and the stars were so beautiful.

Today was crazy. We had a little taste on how a typical day in Microcampus looks like. To tell you the truth, I loved this full day of work because we had something to do every minute. We were not just wondering around the place and fooling around. Another thing that really kept me thing was when Mr. Tafel said something about the experience. He said that Microcampus should not be a fun experience, but and interesting experience.

I found this day amazing!  I got to do one of my favorite things, help out the community. I just found it amazing! We went down to the beautiful area of Erhai. What I thought what was crazy was the fact that, in front of you, you have this amazing view of the mountains, but when you look at the ground, you find so much trash and waste. Every time I see trash all over a beautiful site, I begin to feel very bad. Helping out takes that pain away, and when we cleaned up that area in Erhai, I felt amazing.

Today was just awesome! The one thing that I loved about my day would have to be the moment when I got to just sit down and relax. That was one of the best things in my life! Just imagine, you get to sit down anywhere you want, in the beautiful village of Xizhou, and you get to breath. How magical is that? This trip, to me, is such a blessing and I know that I will never forget this in my life. I will never forget my new family,my family of Microcampus group Fearless.

After a long day of travel, group F of microcampus arrived in Xizhou! My day started with an awesome 4 a.m alarm going off. I had to get all my things and get ready to go to the airport, which I had to arrive there around 5:10. Once I had arrived, all the microcamupus students said good-bye. After a total of about 10-12 hours of travel, microcampus group F finally arrived in the Linden Center. My favorite part of this who day would be the bus ride.

Last night was amazing. The microcampus students of group F had to sleep in the school of Shanghai American School, Pudong. To tell you the truth, I found that an amazing experience because I have never done that in my life! I was always worried that something would happen if I stayed in a lock-it. I popped a small bubble of fear, and to me, that was an amazing feeling.

Hi. My name is Daniel S. I am 14 years old. I was born in Quito, Ecuador, where I lived for 3 years, then the United States for 9 years, and China for one year. There are four people in my family. My father, mother, brother, and I. I can fluently speak Spanish and English, but I am learning Chinese. I have been blessed with this amazing opportunity to go on this wonderful trip of Microcampus. Like Mr. Tafel has said before, this is the perfect opportunity to leave the Pudong "bubble." I had so much fun in XIzhou. The people here are so kind and just great. I had so much fun learning a lot about Bai Minority Music.
