Jacob E. (Alumni-E)'s Journal

I came to Microcampus because I wanted to learn something that I would not learn in shanghai. Experiance something that would not be possible in side the bubble. BE preresented with challenges that could only be solved by me and me alone. And they would be solved because I was able to interact with the enviorment around me and accoplish these goals. I came to Microcampus because I knew it was something that I had to take on as a challenge and I feel like I passed the test.

Packing. Today we pack our bags because tommorw after breakfest there we will be on a bus to Kunnming and than a plane to Shanghai. And XiZhou will be gone. At least for awhile. I plan to come back to XiZhou sometime with my family. Some reasons why I think doing this is a good idea is my family like to bike and It would be really nice to bike here. Some I am sad to leave XiZhou but I know I will come back.  I walked in the bean fields after dinner. It was silghly misty but beatufil.

Today is Wednesday we are 2 days away from leaving. It is almost scary to think about it. Today we are wraping up any loose ends and finish our projects. Tommorw we pack. And Friday we fly. Not much happened today. Although I did make the Video shout out so please check it out. I had a one of my favorite dinners of noodles with meat and veggies. Nothing too intresting happened later on tonight.

Today was a regular day and it looks like the power is going to stay on for the rest of the trip. Service learning was suspened do to the time. We could not  work on any of it well the power was out so that seriously set us behind. Secret Sanata was tonight. It was really nice in the sense that it was extremly chill. I got Julia fake snow.  My gift was a horse racing bord game from Marisa. There is only 3 more days left at Microcampus everyone is so sad. It seems like 4 weeks has been 1 week. So much faster than school.

I tried to make today title to my journal as dramatic as possible. Because for modern day people that is the apocolypse. We awoke to no power, and a freezing cold snowy rooftop. The power was out most of the day. To be exact around 4:00 it came back online. When it came back online I was out playing basketball, with Kevin T. Kevin C. Thomas C. and Vinny C. and Mike C. . Clearly I was the best out of all of them. That is a lie but still I had a great time.

We woke up today with a absoulutly blank schedule. It felt great. It started to rain early on in the day, my perfect Sunday. While chilling in the Movie room it started to rain really hard. I went out to take a look and it was hailing. The hail was pretty big a third of your nail maybe. I was shocked. Along with the hail came freezing tempatures, so I bundled up. Now a few hours later it started to SNOW. It looks beautiful out here in Xizuho right now. With the snow covering the roofs and the mountains. Sadly with the severe cold came a loss of power.

Today we worked a lot on our service learning. Our original partner Mrs. Hou did not want to be filmed. My group was rather up set after that considering that we had been to talk to her many times. And she had so many great stories. Plus it was nice to sit in the sun with her. Tonight there is a huge meteor shower. There is suppose to be 100 every hour. I got up at 2 o - clock and went out to see the stars but I fell asleep almost literally right as I got up there. But I did see one or two meteors.

Today we started working on Final Product. It should be up for inspection on Tuesday by the latest. Other than that the rest of the day was rather quite except for evening activity though. Tonight on evening activity we chose our "partners" for a secret Santa activity. We also watched Get Smart that night. One of the best movies ever! Tomorrow is Saturday a nice chill day. I plan to do some work. We also will do allot of service learning tomorrow.

Today another regular day. But the weather seems to get better and better. It seems like every time it gets colder when sitting in the sun it is warmer. The hacksack(ing) is getting a lot more compittive, and we are getting better. We wrote a english essay, about the giver. It was nice to sortof take you mind off of things when writing that essay. The night was nice I caught up on some work. A week from today is the Jammy awards another one of Mr. T evening activites. Early that day though I was at the Linden Centre and had a great time playing with Nala.

Today was our last day of work on our Phase 3 and there might be a little work tommorw. Tommrow we will start to work more on our final project. We also are going to start working more on our service learning. Which means we might either have Mrs. Hau (I do not know how to spell) or Mr. Ma I think. Today I had a great dinner, thanks to Amy K., it was a thick spicy noodle in a soup with veggies. It was very good.

Today was a nice quiet day. The highlight of my day was probaly talking with Mrs. Hou. She was the lady we have in mind for our serivce learning. It was so nice to sit in the sunshine and just talk about her life. I think the best part was that she was so open. Later on that day I went and checked out the Flying Tiger book, I have looked at it before but not as deep as I did today. And the age of the book is just amazing.

Today we had a regular day, you could say the first regular day in a while. I feel bad actually because most of the people reading this are in Shanghai and they have pollution levels of 500 and over. In XiZhou we are scared to get a 25. But I am going to have to say it, IT IS SO BEATUFIL OUT HERE. Today we got some "candy" (cough cough) to bribe Mr. T, when it come to room inspections. But of course we do not need to be scared though because my room is tidy.

After a nice rest in the morning. Around 12:00 we stared to go down the hill. Down hill was divide into 2 sections one was a flat path the other was a down hill section that wen through some grave sites. I preferred the later. So far in all our opinions day 1 was the hardest. Today was just a breeze. I loved the part going down hill through the burial grounds because it felt so peaceful. We came home on the bus and where exhausted and had a good nights sleep.

Pictures add later.

After a good nights sleep and some hacky-sack, Microcampus new favorite pass time, we where ready for a day on the trail. The first 10 minutes of the hike where up these staris and they went straight up. I am not afraid to admit but I was ready to quit then. We kept going and evuntally got to this flat pine tree strech. People kept saying it remeided them of twighlight. After more up hill and plants in the face we made to the top. And the view was stunning, the misty clouds to one side, and the lake and town to the other .The best part was the mountain just kept going and going.

Today was our first segment of the hike. After for 30 minutes maybe more, on the road that seemed to never end we where already exusted. After that the hike was pretty steep and most of us where winded and tired by the time rolled up at 1:30 ish. We than walked on this very nice stone flat path that cut through a ravine, the view was breathtaking. We arrived at the temple "restaurant" soon after and settled in for a good's night of sleep.

I do not have much to write for today we basically had a regular day, and than backed for the hike. I can not wait to go on the hike I know it will be challenging but I also know it will be one of thoso life experiances where you are like I am so glad I did this. I really have no idea of what to expect weather wise. Because I have heard all types of comments. Over all a good mental prep. day.

After waking up to the most beautiful sunrise in the world. After returning from our little camping extravaganza. The day went by quietly. You could say it was efficient. I think most people here are mental preparing for the hike. I am excited and nervous at the same time. Tonight is the final and non changing night of Trivia. After a week worth of delay we finally have found a time to Trivia. All and all today was not that exciting except for the sunrise.

Last night we went camping, at the tounge of the lake. You could say its like a little (national) park. And it starts off thick and just goes down to a tip like a pennsulyia and/or toungue.  Its really beatufil down there because you can see bothe sides of the lake. We set open camp and tent. I than lied there ont he grass staring at the stars. There was so many of them, and they where so clear because there wher no buildings around us. It was a great night!

Mr. T and I went to the old Flying Tiger out post today to see if we could get in. We did not have any luck however we talked to multiple people. Mrs. Zhao was a lady walking along the road she was very nice and her name is the ancestral name of that town. Meaning that most people are named Zhao. So the next people we meat where also called Zhao. While snooping around the area, we were trying to get in, the noise of the plants in the fields was so soothing. I biked with Nicole down to Lake Eri. And we where there briefly but the peace and quit there was beautiful.

After a night in Dali Old Town, people around here are pretty exustated. Really the only set in stone thing to do today was check in on your well ness. Toninght is triva night with Mr. T. We the Microcampuser have heard much about Triva Night. So it has a reputation to live up to. Today was also a nice day because it is a great day to check in with friends and Shanghai. The picture is of Kara and I, at Shi Fen Jie.

You could say last night was our night on the house. We went to Dali Old Town the tourist attraction of the Dali region, it lived up to expectiaions. My partners for the trip wher Bryce, a Linden boy, and Thomas. I had a great time buying and eating stuff that I did not needd. We had some amazing pizza, that was stoned grilled. We also had these great brownies called ugly brownies that are not really browneis, but more sugar than anything. We had a great night.

Today was a unitesting day. It was normal. It was a recovory time from yesterdays adventure. And it was the second day in a row where my whole room slept in till 7:10. Which feels really good, but shows you how tired we where the day before. It's getting colder out here in XiZhou. But it also feels like the air is getting cleaner. Today is thanksgiving, as you know, I dont think there is anything going on here. However I think that Annalise or Fay have something speacial planned. Happy Turkey Day!

Today was a day with out a WIPPIT. But I feel like I should start with lunch. Why? Because I had the some of the best dumplings ever. The white flush pastry dough of the dumplings was so tasty. I got these heavenly foods from Old town snakes. This is also the place where they sell the Tafel dish. Anyways after this amazing food walking home, I noticed that there where so many clouds in the sky today. And later after some told me about it looked like the clouds made up roads. Going to the Tie-Dye factory was next. Upon arriving I saw some amazing colors and pictures.

The days where you feel the best about yourself usally invole the most "pain" or thinking. Today we had another normal day. Duing WIPPIT time today I worked hard on my Inquiry Project.  I finished my 3 to 5s and moved along with Phase 2 coming to a end. Also today me Kchen K2 Vinne and MIchael went ot the high school to play basketball at the High school. IT took us a good long while to  find a basketball court that was open. Because the cummonity one is only open at night and dancer usally dance there.

Today was a day where the average day of Microcampus comes to life. So after break fest we had our first daily meeting. During this all committees shared who and what they did. The rest of the day was pretty much un-journal worth. However we had our first terrace time today. I had a great time just sitting there and watching the grass move. I think that was the highlight of my day. I also saw the farmers reloading their pesticide spray guns which was very very interesting.

Starting the day bright in early always feels good if there is a clean sky and a warm bowl of Er Zhi to be eaten. Er Zhi is the main dish in XiZhou. It consits of noodles shreded pork (you can have vegetarian), and some veggies. It served regular or SPICY. Today i had regular but I did try SPICY and it is hot. As is most food here in XiZhou. For example eating lunch Shi Fan Jie. We order the Tafel. A dish named after Mr.T, because he helped create it. There are three levels of the Tafel, not spicy, a little spicy, and SPICY.

I just wanted to put one last thing out there before going to bed and having a full-day tomorrow. I have packed everything up, my bag weighs 16 kilos. I got my hiking bag packed up, and "purse". I am all set to go physically. Mentally prepared I would say I am ready. But of course you will never know if you are ready until it is all done. I am exited and cant wait to get up at 3:00 A.M.

As I sit here now I think about the future and the present. I think how I am going to use what I learned today and apply it to Microcampus. I think how today really was its own miny Microcampus. Now we now know the hurtles ahead of us and how to jump them so now we have to run into the hurtles and take on the challenge.

I am feeling and i know that I will be feeling in a month, excitement, curiosity, and a sense of calm. I am exited because I am going so where new. Which for me is always a fun thing. But more importantly I am excited because Microcampus from what i have heard seen and generally just know. Seems like an overall great thing, that I would love to experience. I fell curious because I want to learn more about china and how the life is away from all the apartments, buses and skyscrapers. And that connects in to the sense of calm it brings. Because I am going to be away from all of the bus etc.

Hi 你好 my name is Jacob. I was born in Taipei Taiwan. I am a American and Canadian citizen. I lived in Taiwan for 11 and a half years. I then moved to the US for 2 and now I live in Shanghai. So I am a 3rd culture kid! I love airports and traveling around the world. Never have had a Twinkie. I had a great experience at XiZhou the best part for me most likely was the silence, and of course the food.
