Orion L. (Alumni-O)'s Journal

I came to Microcampus to learn about the China and the parts of China that I haven't seen. I am really interested in seeing places and moving, as I am a kid that moves often. I really like to see new places and people and new environments. When I heard about the program and what the Microcampus kids do, I was really drawn by the way Microcampus works. This program was something that I thought I could need and that not only it would be a great experience, but also a great learning journey. I have grown as a person and I am really glad that I made the choice to go on this amazing trip.

So last night we went to go see Dali Old Town. This is a modernized and globalized area of town. There are plenty of rester aunts that are targeted towards tourists. Our group went to go eat at a cafe, where they served hamburgers. grilled cheese, and some pasta. We had about 4 hours to look around Dali Old Town and see the city and to eat food. This trip is a trip to award the effort put into our Inquiry Project, and our behaviors and the good work we have done.

Here is a quote that Mr. T told us out of many other quotes.

Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago-Warren Buffet

So this is a quote that represents something that also ties into this program. For this trip to be possible or to function well it required tons of planning and preparation. If Mr. T and Mrs. Mai had not planned out the trip so thoughtfully. So, this quote really states what Mr. T and Mrs. Mai have done, because they planted the tree long ago we can sit in the shade right now.

Mr. Zhao went to the hospital today and so he was not able to attend the video viewing in the TV room. So, after the presentation was over, we were able to and bring fruit and show the video to Mr. Zhao in his house. The house was the same and we showed the video and gave the disk to him and thanked him for his efforts and decision to be a partner. The video went smoothly as Mr. Zhao was laughing and appreciated the video, while he thanked us for the disk and the nice letter.

Today I am writing before the power and Internet go out during 2-4 o'clock. Today we do not have any water for laundry as my room three group mates have to hand wash their cloth. The funniest part of today is when Mrs. Mai called the room three kids to tell them the good news and bad news. The bad news was no power, and the good news was the power would be back on at 8 pm, which means no laundry machine for this room. As I am wrapping up everything I feel good about the work that I have done.

Today we started on putting the Service Learning video together for our final presentation this Wednesday. The process so far has been un eventful, we secured our partner early and started filming early so that we can have as much time as possible to put together our video. The process has been great so far and I am really excited to show Mr. Zhao the video that we have made to show thanks to him and the Xizhou community. I hope the video goes well and that Mr. Zhao will appreciate our effort.

So last night our team. the Stenotypes, won Mr. T's All star Whiz Bang Super Duper Trivia. Our team used stock high school characters as our themes, hence the name stereotypes. It all came down to the decisions on how much we would bet for the final jeopardy. This is a rash decision that ended up resulting in the victory. I will always remember this night as the night that we won Mr. T's All star Whiz Bang Super Duper Trivia. This was a very interesting experience and I will remember it as the day we won.

Today it also rained during the afternoon, which meant that our laundry got wet again after last laundry day were it also rained. We have moved the clothes so we are good and the clothes are drying now. The 3rd week has been going well.

Today was a great day and also a sad day. It is the final day for our Phase 3. I wish that I could work on this more and go out into the village some more. I am also glad that I can work on the final product now and I am glad that I can move on. Today was not as stressful as I thought it would be and I was able to get my work done and my Phase 3 finished.

Today is the second to last day that we have to work on our Phase 3, gathering information. I went to go see Mr. Zhao again to get more information on my hangers and hooks. This trip I learned a lot more about the building the history of the building. This will be one of the last times that I might see him. However Mr. Zhao might be a great option for Service Learning, so I might see him some more.

Today is the second Sunday of Microcampus, and it is also the second week of this trip. This second week has been great and I have felt that I have been really productive. This week has gone by really fast and I was kind of shocked. This week I was able to get two times in zone, which was improvement from last week. For the next week my goal is to be three times in zone so that I can reach my wellness gals.

Today was the start of our Service Learning. We had three hours in the afternoon to go out to the village to talk to some older folks about their lives and what happened in them. So we had this instead of WIPPIS time today. Our group went to talk to a lady that owns an antique shop, but she was at Dali old town today. So, we went to our alternative plan of going to talk to Mr. Zhao, my inquiry project contact.

Today was the 5 hour hike and the Half way point of our trip. It seems like these past two weeks have gone by really fast. I was surprised when I realized that our group is half way through our trip. The hike was really long and very tiring, but I was able to get an hour in zone while wearing my Heart Rate Monitor. We hiked along the jade belt and we returned to have noodles and tangyuan for dinner. Today I had a lot of fun, but I am ready to go to sleep.

I was able to take Mr. T out to see the old Flying Tigers radar station, and have him meet Mr. Zhao. I was able to get Mr. Zhao's phone number and could call him to make sure that he was going to be that day when I had teacher support. Mr. T and I went to bike to the old station, and Mr. Zhao and Mr. T had a great conversation and I was able to get good information from the conversation. I was also looked at my hangers and hooks again to narrow down what I was asking. It was a great to show Mr. T the old radar station.

Today was exciting as Mr. T received a package that had an insurance seal sticker. The sticker read, "If this seal is destroyed or damaged, it is then not covered by the insurance company." Well, we had to check if the computer was okay and not broken, but to do so we had to open the box. Meaning we had to take off the sticker and cut through it. So we had to check if the computer was ok and hope it wasn't broken because the seal was.

It was a regular Microcampus day. I was able to get Mr. Zhao's phone number and I am going to set up a meeting time with him for Thursday. So I went to visit him with some oranges and offered to give them to him. He politely told me that he doesn't any because I should eat the oranges so that I grow and because I am young. He is a really polite and kind man and I hope to visit him again. He also might be a good option for service learning as he is around 77 years old. I was then able to talk to Yang Nai Nai and give her some oranges.

My day was a normal Microcampus day, so not much happened in the course of the day. However, for the evening activity I played Pictionary with Seyoung. It was really cool to play with him, because I really do not know him too well, so it was a great bonding experience. I was able to get to know Seyoung more and we relaxed and prepared ourselves for the MAP test that was tomorrow.

Today was the day after our camp out. We went to Erhai to camp for the night and to experience a hike and how to set up and take down tents. We hiked back to the Linden Centre to have a breakfast of omelets and bacon. It was the best breakfast I have had on Microcampus so far. Today was a chill day were we worked on pitching in and resting after the hiking trip. I am ready for week two of Microcampus!

Today marks the first week of Microcampus. We started off with a late breakfast to have some extra rest after the first week here, which was one to remember. My week had some really crazy things happen, but I am glad that I overcame and also learned. Tonight we are going to camp at Erhai, which will be fun. My favorite part of this week was meeting Mr. Zhao, and being able to see the old radar station. This was a great first week of Microcampus!

Today was the first time I did laundry on Microcampus. It was interesting to hang up our clothes on a clothesline instead of putting it into the drying machine. I went to walk to the old Flying Tigers radar station and went to the village that surrounds the old radar station. The tie-dye factory was next on our trip and we had a half-day trip there. We saw the indigo dye being boiled and then our pieces of cloth put into the indigo dye. It was interesting to see how it was made. This was interesting to see this process.

Today was a monumental day for me as I was able to go into the old Flying Tigers radar station. Mr. Jake accompanied me and we went to go see if anybody was there. We met a nice man named Mr. Zhao, he is part of the family that owned the house where the Flying Tigers stayed. Mr. Zhao let us inside and we talked in the courtyard for some chatter, then some of my big question. Mr. Zhao was 15 at the time when the Flying Tigers stayed. It was really nice talking to Mr. Zhao and we were able to see a site where even Mr. T has gone before. Today was a pretty awesome day!

My computer hard drive crashed yesterday so I spent today catching up on my Inquiry work and journal entries. Even though I have this setback, I have been assisted through this process and my group mates and Mr. T have been really helpful. So today I spent my day working and it was a good feeling at the end of the day when I had most of my work done and caught up. I hope that I can continue to work though the given conditions.

Today was the first day of Microcampus, where Mr. T and Ms. Mai gave us the controls and we had to handle ourselves and get our schedule done with little guidance and instruction from the teachers. We had our first WIPPIS time set into our daily schedule. Today I went on a bike ride that was about 4 km. During the bike ride we rode on this large stretch of cement where we went at a high speed on to get in zone. This was my first Wellness trip during Microcampus, and now it will be worked into our daily schedule. After a big day, we ended the night with a movie.

After sleeping for our nine hours, my roommates and I woke up early to see the sunset and watched as the world went from light to dark. There was a rainbow of colors that was the background of the sky. We ate a good break fest and tried Er si for the first time. After unpacking our luggage, we went for the tour of the Linden Centre and Xizhou. We went to go see the noodle factory where our Er si is made. We went to go exchange bills, and experience lunch in Si Fang Jie. It was a little interesting being in Xizhou for one full day.

Today was a big travel day for group O.R.E.O. and me as we left Shanghai early morning and arrived at the Linden Centre around 6 o'clock. We started off the day off with an early morning wake up and travel to the Hongqiao airport. From there O.R.E.O grouped together at exit 3 and took some pictures and said goodbyes to parents. The airport counter was filled with hiking backpacks, day packs, and our luggage.

I am 13 years old and an 8th grader at SAS. My inquiry project is about the Flying Tigers in Xizhou. I was born in Salt Lake City, UT and grew up in the Taylorsville Utah. I am a Vietnamese football player from and born in Utah and love physical activity (anything that will make me sweat) and football! My favorite team is the Dallas Cowboys. I was on the O.R.E.O Microcampus trip and met and made some really good connections. I really enjoyed time in Xizhou. I have been able to meet a great man by the name of Mr. Zhao who has been a real good friend and a great partner for Inquiry and Service Learning.
