April 30th marks the beginning of a 28-day trip in which 15 students from Shanghai American School will be traveling to a small village in Southern Yunnan, where they will each explore a certain topic about the village that interests them. This topic they choose is to help them further develop a sense of the daily lives of villagers, to explore the cultural depths of the village, and to understand and get to know themselves in a completely different way.

Before break, I completed Phase 0 of this project, in which I decided on an Inquiry Project to work on. I began with three choices (Local Education System, Textile Production, and People Watching/Body Language), and over time made my final decision, which was to explore in depth the Body Language of the people in the village at XiZhou. I am also considering a merge of topics, between the body language of people and the local cultures and traditions of that area.

Welcome to the next phase -- Phase 2! In Phase 1, I developed 10 Big Questions that I would answer upon my arrival in Xizhou. Those 10 questions will be leading me into my journey at XiZhou. Here in Phase 2, I will be locating resources that will help me gather information when our group arrives in XiZhou.

In my past few phases, I decided on an Inquiry Project, and developed a few questions. Here in phase 3, I will be conducting background research about my topic, Body Language/People Watching. Now that our Phenomena Group has arrived in XiZhou, I have been noticing traits in the body language of people; and I have already begun making connections with the local people here in XiZhou.

Background Information (from Phase 1):

What is Body Language?

Looking back to the beginning of the Inquiry Project process, it all began with Phase 0, where I looked through a list of topics and chose one of my interest. In Phase 1, I came up with 10 big questions that would guide me as I continued in the process. After that, I moved on to Phase 2, where I received information regarding helpful contacts that I should consult. In the last phase, Phase 3, I conducted research and gathered information from local contacts. Here in Phase 4, I will be gathering my thoughts and making an outline for the final product.

About This Learner

Hey! My name is Marie W., and I am a member of the Phenomena Group of the Microcampus Program. As of now, I am thirteen years old; and I have been living in Shanghai, China for the past ten years of my life. I am half American and half Chinese, therefore fluent in both English and Chinese. Our Phenomena Group just recently departed from XiZhou, and I remember clearly how my days there were full of excitement and activity. The topic I investigated for the four weeks was centered around the differences in body language and characteristics of the different people in XiZhou. While I was in XiZhou, I developed strong relationships with the locals and learned to interact with people more freely. XiZhou has helped me grow as a person, and I hope that all future Microcampus students will enjoy the trip as much as I did!
