Josh G. (Alumni-N)'s Journal

I thought that I came to Mircocampus to experience life outside of the bubble, and to get out of my comfort zone more. I thought that I would not have to do much work here and still get to experience everything, but I was wrong. Another reason was so that I could be more independent and responsible when I go back to Shanghai.

I also wanted to learn more about China, and see how people lived their lives in a small village compared to a big city such as Shanghai.

Today is our final day of Microcampus, so we spent most of the day preparing to go home. Surprisingly it was not very hard to pack my bag because I just stuffed everything in it then jumped on it, so it was very easy. After I finished packing everything, I turned my keys into Mr. T and wrote my day 28 journal. Tonight is aslo the Jammies which I am excited for.

Today we had the second trip to Dali Old Town, it was not as far away as I thought it was but it was still a half hour bus ride to get there. We were supposed to split up into groups of three or four, however, there were 5 of us who had not completely finished our work, so we stayed in one of the cafes to finish our work. I finished my work in the first 20 minutes. because I did not have much to work on, but none of us were allowed to leave until we were all finished. While we were working we ordered some food, I got a steak sandwich, which most other people got too.

We finally had trivia night, after it being canceled two different times. We had to decide on our costumes quickly so we just decided to do something weird. We ended up wearing pajamas tucked into long socks, scarves, hats, and sunglasses. The trivia night was basically just jeopardy, there were three different rounds, one had point values of 1,2,3,4,5, one had point values of 2,4,6,8,10, and the last round you could bet your points, and if you got 5 of 7 questions right you would get all of the points that you bet.

I finished my inquiry project today, it did not take that long as I have done most of the work yesterday, leaving only a small amount of work left to do today. After I finished I needed to get Mr. T's Pearls Of Wisdom, which is just his advice for making our project better. However, there was a very long line of people waiting to talk to Mr. T about their project, so I waited for him to be ready. I spent my time waiting catching up on all of the journals that I had forgotten to do over the past few days.

I continued working on my final product today, I got my reflection done, and almost finished the sharing my learning part, although I had to re-record my voice overs because they were too quiet. When I did that, I realized that I had forgotten to add certain parts into my project, so I had to write my script down and do the recording. After I as done with all of that, I was close to being finished, but still needed a few touch-ups to make it look better.

Today was our second last day for laundry, we do have one more laundry day, but it is on day 27 so we decided that we are not going to do it. When we finished doing our laundry in the morning, I started working on the sharing my learning portion of my final product. At first I was stressed about it and did not think that I would be able to finish it, but then I realized that I was already half way done with it in a small amount of time. So I stopped worrying about it, and just kept working on it. In the end I did not finish it, but I will get an extension tomorrow and finish it then.

Today was the first day to work on our final product for our inquiry project. I got my introduction done, and started thinking about what I was going to do for the sharing my learning portion of the final product. Today we were also introduced to hacky sack, its a game that Mr. T taught us, that involves kicking a small ball into the air towards someone else who has to try and hit it, it goes on like this until someone drops the ball. I am not very good at it and I do not think that I ever really will be.

Today at breakfast Mr. T was bragging about his new amazing bag, I didn't think it was that amazing, but I just went along with it so that he would feel good about himself. Later in the day we started on our Phase 4 work, and finished it as well. It wasn't very hard to do, as it was a very short phase and did not include much work.

Today was the last day oh Phase 3, so I had to finish all of my work, and write down information from my last 2 conversations. When I was finished, I went out for another conversation even though I wouldn't be able to write any of the information down. We are going to be doing all of Phase 4 tomorrow, and then start on our final product on Friday, I am not completely sure as to what I am going to do for my final product yet, but I'm sure I will know for tomorrow.

During my inquiry project time today, I did not go out because I had a lot of information thta I had collected to write down. So I spent a long time writing down information, then realised that I was almost late for my next activity, so in a rush, I closed my computer without saving my work. When I got back from my activity, I opened my computer and realised that I had forgotten to save my work. Also, my computer was saying that Google Chrome had stopped responding, meaning that I couldn't do anything unless I closed the window.

I spent a long time today eating breakfast. Since it is a weekend we were given bacon at breakfast, although the rest of the breakfast was the same. After breakfast I worked on my wellness reflection, where I reflected on my social, physical, and emotional wellness throughout the week. I spent the rest of the day working on my humanities school work, and making sure that I wasn't behind on any work for Microcampus or school.

We spent most of the day yesterday on a hike up the side of the mountain. It took almost 5 hours but it was still fun, and there were a lot of good places to take pictures. The hike itself wasn't as hard as I thought it would be, although my feet started to hurt a lot towards the end of it. During the hike, I realized that I shouldn't go too fast in case the rest of the group couldn't keep up with us. After we finished the hike, I was so tired that I fell asleep in the car.

Today for my Inquiry project, I went out to an antique shop to talk to the owner. Although she was not old enough to know the answers to some of my questions I asked some other questions that would fit for her age. Unfortunately my conversation with her was cut short when her son grabbed a plastic basket, that was full of old pottery, and pulled it down, causing all of the pottery to shatter against the floor. After she had cleaned it up, I asked her a few more questions and ended our conversation.

Today during my inquiry project time, I waited for Mr. Robert in the courtyard, and didn't realise that he was in the security guards office, so I after 15 minutes with no sign of him, I decided to go back upstairs, and make sure that I had all of my work done from yesterday. About 15 minutes later, I heard that he was looking for me, so I went downstairs and apologised for not being there. In the small amount of time that I had left, I tried to see if I could talk to Mr. Du, the antique shop dealer.

Yesterday we began our normal work day again, after the weekend. I spent the first part of the day, cleaning my room to make sure that it was clean for the room inspecion. After the room inspections, which me and my roommates (Cole and Yannick) did well on, we had lunch. After lunch we had WIPPIS time, in the time slot that I had for inquiry project time, I attempted to meet with Mr.

Yesterday we went out to Lake Erhai to go camping for the night. After lunch, we packed our dinner, and started biking out to the lake. While we were biking down one street, there was a car in front of us going in the same direction, and a car on the other side of the road going the opposite direction as us. Not knowing what to do, I went to the left side of the road, the side that the car heading towards us was on. I did not get hit, but I was still glad that I had my safety vest on so that the car could see me coming.

Today we had our half day trip to the wind farm. It wasnt quite as cold as I thought it would be, but it was still very windy. While we were there, we were allowed to climb down the side of the mountain and take pictures of us with the landscape in the background. On the way back from the wind farm, Mr. T started to make a lot of puns about cows, after about 20 cow puns everyone was starting to get tired of listening to his puns. For the rest of the day, everyone tried to turn everything people were saying into a pun.

Today was just another normal day of Microcampus, we started out the day with breakfast, did our SAS work, had our daily meeting, pitching in time and then lunch. Next we had WIPPIS time, today I did the same thing as yesterday, although this time I had to do more committee work, so that I could get the food menu done for next week. Next Friday everyone is going on a field trip to either the wind farm, or the tie-dye factory. Most people decided to go to the wind farm, and I did too. After dinner tonight we are going to have Mr.

Today was our first day of WIPPIS time, which stands for Wellness, Inquiry Project, Pitching In, and Still Time. The first thing I had to do was Inquiry project, which I spent working finishing Phase 2 of my project. Next, I had wellness time, which I spent jogging around Xizhou so that I got time in zone. I then had still time, in which I sat by the fields for 20 minutes. Finally I had pitching in time, that I spent finishing my committee work.

Today we explored the rest of Xizhou that we did not have the chance to look at yet, we started at Happy Embroidery, where we looked at some of the embroidery done by the people who work there. We then looked around the rice factory and the local market that sold the meats and spices for the whole village. After that, we looked at some of the tie dye, that people have made. Some of them were old fashioned with simple designs and colors, but some had very complicated designs and involved a lot of colors. Some of the artworks even had images of marijuana on them.

We started our journey to Xizhou yesterday by driving to the airport. Everyone met at the airport to say goodbye to our parents (for the exception of Melanie who will be joining us today). After we checked in our bags, we made our way through security and got lunch. When we arrived in Xizhou, we were given a brief introduction of where we will be staying, and what we will be doing for the next few days. Soon after we arrived at the hotel we had dinner and chose who would get which bunk in our room. Yannick and I both chose the top bunks, so Cole had to take the bottom bunk.

It is just under 2 months until I leave for Microcampus. I have started to think about what my days will be like living in the village and staying at the Linden Centre. Will it be cold? Does it rain a lot? I hope so because I like cold weather. I have had a look at the profiles of other students who have taken the trip to see what projects they have undertaken during their time at Microcampus. I am looking forward to choosing my own topic. The wellness portion of the trip will be important to me, I need to maintain my fitness for swimming!
