On November 14th, 2015, I traveled with 12 other students from the Pudong Campus of the Shanghai American School to a village in the Yunnan Province, Xizhou. For 28 days we will be living outside our expat bubble of Shanghai, experiencing a new environment and culture. Microcampus will challenge us to develop greater levels of independence and responsibility and strengthen our abilities to interact with a wider community. A major part of our time in Xizhou will be spent working on an Inquiry Project which will be centered on a local topic that is of great interest to me.

So far I have I have completed Phase 0, in which I chose the topic that I will be researching while I am in Xizhou. The first step was to select the three topics that I was most interested in from the list of possible topics. I also had to think about if I would get bored of the topic while working on it. The three topics that I chose were architecture, water treatment and local history.

In Phase 0 and Phase 1 of my Inquiry Project I have identified a specific topic that I will investigate during my time at Microcampus. The topic I have chosen covers the local history of Xizhou: in particular the legacy of Deng Xiaoping on village life. Phase 1 involved formulating a list of 10 major questions that I am seeking answers for.

In Phase 0 I spent time selecting my topic of choice from many options. I decided to study Local History and then had to decide on a sub-topic to research. After a quick review of China's History from 1949 onwards, I decided to focus on Deng Xiaoping and how his policies effected the local villagers of Xizhou.
