Cole W. (Alumni-N)'s Journal

Before I came to Microcampus I wanted to come to get outside of my comfort zone, experience real China and mature as a person. While I still cared about what my first 2 reasons I was really looking forward to coming home to Shanghai more mature and responsible. I had this idea that I might go through some sort of transformation and come back different.

Today is the last real day of Microcampus. Tomorrow is just a travel day. The month of Microcampus is coming to an end. I am going to miss Xizhou, but I am also looking forward to seeing my friends and family in Shanghai. We have to wake up at 5 in the morning tomorrow. Apparently the re-entry to Shanghai is hard, I do not know for sure. Although Xizhou feels normal, so will normal in Shanghai feel different? I do not know, but I know I am happy to see my friends and family from Shanghai for the first time in a month.

Today we had our 2nd room inspection. In the first room inspections my group got -1.7, I am still not sure if Mr. Tafel was joking when he gave us that score but we redeemed ourselves today. My room, the 3 guys got a 4.9 out of 5. If it was not for Yannick having a messy luggage we would have gotten a 5. We also had Mr. T's All Star Super Duper Whizbang Trivia Night, tonight. My group 2nd place. Every group had to wear some sort of costumes and all the groups were funny.

We had our 2nd movie night tonight. We watched Ace Venture, Pet Detective starring Jim Carrey. I had seen it before but I was not dissapointed when I saw it again, it was still extremely funny. I always liked Jim Carrey movies, and have not been dissapointed by one yet. I was Ace Ventura for Halloween. The first movie night we had was also a Jim Carrey movie. We also had an intermission this time where we ate some cookies and moon pies. Thank you Microcampus and thank you Jim Carrey.

Today I went out with Josh to get my mom a souvenir, specifically a vase or some pottery. I was told that Mr. Du had very good antiques so I went to his shop. I looked around for a while not sure what to get my mom when I saw a nice green piece of pottery with leaf and bamboo patterns on it in good condition. I sent a picture to my mom to make sure that she would like and she said she did. When my brother went on Microcampus 2 years ago he was going to get my mom some pottery as well but forgot. I asked the piece of the pottery and it was 1500 Yuan.

My service learning group just recently start making the video and that is when we all realized, that for the most part "we" are not making the video, Joanne is. Joanne is the only chinese speaking person in our group, the only person who can translate. I have tried but I really only ended up correctly typing a few random phrases I could pick out and no one else in the group had any better luck than me. Our group is going to try to support Joanne whenever we can, doing her dish duty for her and other assorted chores.

Today I finished my book for humanities, Red Scarf Girl. I had been pretty far behind so I read a ton and I finally finished my book. It is pretty good, although after a day of hardcore reading it feels like a fairly short book. I happy to have it finished early so on thursday and friday I do not have to worry about it all day. Although I still have a Humanities paper to write but atleast I have time to write it. Reading is just expected that people have been doing it in scattered down time and quiet time.

Today Mr. T showed us his genetics presentation. It was more interesting than an average science class atleast. It was pretty cool, I even stayed for part 2. His presentation made me consider finding out my group in genetics. Every man from father to son's Y chromosone is the same with the exception of a few mutations here and there. I also found that cool. It means I have 50% of my dad from his Y chromosone. So will my son some day. I wonder what else genetics will reveal for us in the future.

Today at breakfast I realized everyone eats breakfast differently, some people eat breakfast slowly and practically lick their plates clean. Some people use as many utensils as possible and make it hard for the dish washer, some people spread nutella all over their pancakes. I eat everythign with my hands. I eat my pancake like a burrito. I have no reason or use for utensils. I wonder what that reveals about my character. I am nice to dishwashers or am I really lazy?

At Microcampus we are not only doing an inquiry proejct, but also a service learning project where we find elders in Xizhou, tap into their wisdom, experiences and expertise to make a video for the service learnign project. The lady we have chose is extremely nice and did not hesitate to agree to be our partner. Although there is always a chance she may back out but when we first introduced ourselves to her and asked if we could ask her a few questions she said if she has an answer she will say it and if not, that sucks.

Today everybody in Microcampus went on a half day hiking and hiked about 3/4 of the Cangshan mountain. Once we get to the 3/4 mark we stopped the uphill hike and starting walking across the jade belt on the mountain. It was a flat trail with an amazing view of the other mountains around it, the nature and Xizhou. Mr. T warned us of a storm coming, he said we felt the front of the storm, or the cold front. I hope the storm does not hit us too hard.

Josh and I went jogging in the rice fields for wellness today. We were not actually stomping on the crop but on pathways inbetween the fields. I like it alot more than jogging in the city and the rice fields are an amazing sight, they are also much more peaceful. A drastic change from my Shanghai life which I will be going back to in only 15 more days. Microcampus is going by so fast.

Finally, I found the snickers. I was just in a grocery store to maybe pick out a snack when I saw the tasty snickers. They looked so beautiful under the counter. They had been hidden for so long. I asked Peyton, my brother who went to Microcampus but he could not remember where he got them. They have been found, the snickers, about the only real sugar I will be having on Microcampus. Although do not worry, I will not over eat.

My first conversation with a rose jam shop owner lasted the whole alloted inquiry project block and I was slightly late to the everyday meeting at 5:45 PM. Although today I went to the spice maker and he was not there so I tried going to Xizhou ba-ba vendors. I talked to 2 of them. Ms. Zhang knew one of them so it was a bit easier. While the other vendor was not hard to talk to, it was still different because I could not ask her a few questions.

I had returned from my journey. Along with my two pals, Josh of Australia and Yannick of Germany... kind of. We had to set our tents back up as they had braved the elements and needed to dry. After we had set up our make shift shelters to recover from last night I also put out my sleeping bag, to make sure it was alright. But my tent had not gone back unharmed, 3 stakes were injured almost beyond repair. Luckily there was Mr. T, he made the stakes straight as can be.

Today we were supposed to have Mr. T's All Start Super Duper Whiz Bang Trivia Night. But it got cancelled. I'm not sure exactly how I feel about that. When we first arrived at Microcampus I was way behing everybody. I was in Phase 3 getting background research for step 3 of Phase 1. Even though I was behind I worked hard and got caught up.

We Microcampus group N students had our first daily meeting today. We are molding quickly molding into a steady schedule. It's only day 3 and we are practically there, I know we will be tomorrow. We also did our committee work. I am in 2 committees. The evening programming committee and the website janitor committee. In the evening programming committee we plan 1 hour and 20 minute block of downtime after dinner. I am hoping to stop by the Linden Center's movie collection and see if they have ghost busters. That would be a good movie for a movie night.

Mr. T exorcised the demons today, further supporting my thesis that he is a wizard. Then again he told us he would say that after plunging a toilet, but still, I have other evidence. He took a key and gave it to the girls to hide somewhere in their socks or jacket pocket. He them used his "psychic powers" to find out where it was. He guessed right once, and the other time he guessed who it had been on. After we learned Mr. T was a wizard we took a tour of the village and ate lunch. Now Mr. T's hope is we will be able to get back to Yang Zhou Ran anywhere in the village.

Yesterday I traveled with my Microcampus group (with the exception of Melanie) to Xizhou. After the trip we got to our "Microcampus". We got a brief introduction to where we will be staying and we also got a taste of what Microcampus will be like. This was nice because I got an introduction to the schedule and it settled my nerves. What we are going to be doing is no longer unknown. We also chose bunks. Mine is below Yannick's; this may be the worst decision I've ever made in my life.

Hi, my name is Cole and I am a student, who is a part of an amazing experience known as "Microcampus". What I and my peers are doing is going out to a village called Xizhou. In Xizhou we will be escaping the "bubble" we live in in Shanghai. In Xizhou I am and will continue to experience real Chinese culture.
