Chuli R. (Alumni-D)'s Journal

Today during WIPPIT time we started packing. It was very sad to think our time here is done. We had a really fun evening of looking back on our time here at microcampus. Today was a pretty relaxing day. We got to go to our service learning partner and show him the video. Many others at the mosque were intresting in what we were doing, so if you are a future microcampus student, you should go to the mosque and look there. Our day here was very peaceful I think we are getting all ready to go back to shanghai, really wish we had more time, but we dont so yea.

I came to microcampus because it sounded like a great opportunity to have school beyond the walls. I also came because I knew it was a once-in-a-life time opportunity so I wanted to go. It was a really great experence I would go on it again if I could because it was really fun. I really loved the clean air and the weather. It was very different from Shanghai weather. I also really enjoyed the food here, it was different than in Shanghai.

Our service learning partner was not able to attend our sharing of videos, so we did not get to see his face when we showed our video. Watching the other service learning partners' faces was really exciting. I really loved it when Mr. Yang, our neighbor, was taking a bunch of photos with his camera. I thought it was a really nice thing to see some of the elder people in XiZhou all together to see there memories getting saved for future generations to look back on.

Tonight we played Black Jack and Apples to Apples. It was super fun. Instead of betting with money, we used candy. Today I finished my inquiry final project plus my reflection. For service learning we are making progress. I went and got pictures with Kate W. for our final project. Other than that today is just a normal day. Plus we started to talk about what we need to do in order to get ready to leave. :( I can't believe we only have a couple more days of Microcampus.

Today was a normal schedual day. Nothing very special happened today, but I did get a lot done on my final project today. I think I could be almost finished, but I just have to finsih my reflection first. Other than inquiry work, our service learning is going good too. We still have to write the artical, but we have to translate the interview first, and thats taking awhile. We still do not know if Yang Da Guan, our service learning partner, can come to the showing on Wednessday, but I really hope he can.

Today is our last Sunday here! I can not believe that its almost over!!! Today Mr. T and I went to Dali Old Town to see where Da Wenxiu was burried. We also saw this very big Mosque and there was a small display of very interesting facts about the Hui community. The trip was very helpful to my inquiry project and also to better understand the Hui people. Other than that, my day was very relaxful. I really like the weekends because they hlep me catch up on any lost sleep or work.

Today we had a surprise from XiaoTang. She said we were going to reflect on our time here at Microcampus, but instead we got to go in horse cart to Erhai lake. It was fun because we got to enjoy the secnear with out having to walk. Other than that surpise, we had a normal day. We are getting super close to finishing out inquriy project! All thats left is filling in the gaps and making the final project. We also have to work on service learning, which is a bit hard because we have to get connected to an elder in the community and be able to film them.

Today we got to go to Dail Old Town again. It was so fun, I think it was better the second time because we knew where the places where and what we wanted to do. I really love Sweet Tooth. It has really good cakes. We also ate Dumplings. Other than that we ran around and bought some stuff and just looked around. It was super fun. I really hope we get to go back again sometime. Other than that today was a normal day.

Today was the final day of hiking. Today was way easier than any other day we had. We pretty much went down hill the whole time. It did not rain the entire time we were hiking which is awesome. I really enjoyed the hike, even though it was really tiring the view made it all worth it. When we finally got back to YZR (aka. home) we all took nice long showers and had a very big dinner. I really enjoyed the hike, even though I probably would not go on it again. The view was really worth all the effort we put in to get up to 3232 meters above sea level.

Today was probably the best hiking day yet. We only hiked for about 2-ish hours and the view was amazing. It was not as hard as yesterdays hike, but it was a lot of up hill. Today we got up to 3232 meters above sea level. The view was probably one of the best things, other than it did not rain yet. Once we got our tents put up we got to have the afternoon to do whatever we wanted to. We climbed up some small moutians and we played games. Later in the afternoon yaks started to get closer to our tents. They were only about 20 ft away from us.

Today was the first day of hiking. It was really tiring, but it was really nice to finally get to our campsite and rest. I really enjoyed the phyical part of it, the mental part of it was pretty challenging. Even though it was pretty tough I really think it was a good experience, tomorrow is supposed to be a shorter hiking day. Once the sun went down it got pretty cold fast, we were at 2900 meters above sea level. We star gazed and learned a lot about the stars. After that we went to bed with about 3 layers of cloths on to stay dry!

Today we were preparing for our hiking trip that is tomorrow. I really hope it will be fun and not to tiring. Other than preparing for our hike, we just had a normal day. It rained a lot today. I started to run laps around XiZhou with Kate J. when it started to rain, luckily we finished before it started to pour. That was probably my highlight of today. I really hope that it will not rain during our hiking trip. Other than that my day was pretty normal!

Today we had a camp out at Tongue of the Lake. Tongue of the Lake is a peninsula in the Erhai lake. It was very interesting, we rode the bikes there though very big puddles. The biggest puddle was probably has high as my knee. After we got there we were all very wet. It was starting to become dark and we started pitching the tents. The tents were actually very easy to put up and me and Kate W. had ours up in a couple minutes. During the night we had some rain, but other than that it was a nice night. In the morning we had an adventure getting back 'home'.

Today for WIPPIT time Mr. T, Graham, Fei, and me went with Mr. Yang to this antique place. On the way there I got to ask Mr. Yang questions, Mr. Yang is in the Hui minority group. I now know much more information about the Hui group. I know only need to interview some Bai people and maybe some more Hui people, then I will be done with Phase 3. Other than that tomorrow night we have a campout by the lake. It is to get ready for our hiking trip. I am really excited for it!

Tonight we had trivia night. My group, Miranda, Matt, Rory, Me, all dressed up as nerds. It was super fun, even though we lost. I thought that trivia night was a fun activity because we learned many interesting things. Most of the questions were things that I did not know, but I did learn a lot today! On friday we have our 3 day hike. I am really excited for it.

Today was a very relaxing day. I caught up on some sleep and cleaned up my suitcase a bit. I really enjoyed today because we did not have anything planed, and it really felt relaxing after a week of hard work. I also did my laundry today, which is always an adventure. Today the laundry actually went pretty fast, it also dried faster probably because we figured out how to use the washing machine. The weather today was very pretty. Very sunny with a little bits of clouds. I think that also helped with helping the clothes dry faster.

Today marks one week that we were in XiZhou. I can not believe that it has been one week since we arrived! Besides it being the one week marker, we finally got to sleep in! Our day was pretty chill, we started our service learning projects by going out into the community and talking with locals. My service learning group is Kate W. Grace and Miranda. We got to talk to about three locals that could all become possible service learning partners. Other than starting our service learning project, we got to sleep in relax!

Today was really intersting. We went to Dali Old Town for dinner and just to look around. I thought there were many tourist there, but many more things to buy. But for me the most interseting part about today was probably going to the Muslim Mosque. They were doing their prayer when we were there and we got to talk to some of them. They gave us this really good bread that they get every friday. I thought it was very intersting because because the building and people looked very chinese, but the sounds and the inside of the building looked very Muslim.

Today the most intersting thing was going to the temple with Kate W. We saw three boys cooking a rabbit that they caught themself. They also had no adult supervison plus they were only 10 years old. I found that really intersting because in my culture no 10 year old would do that. I also get the oppurinity to go to the temple at 11 at night to see people going to worship to their gods for the Moon Festival. Other that that, today was just normal, doing wellness and inqury project.

Todays highlight was probably the 2 hour bike ride. It was super fun seeing Erhai lake up close and riding the bikes on some rigid road. I also liked having the bike ride count for our '30 minutes in the zone' fitness piece. I also really loved seeing the temple right next to Erhai lake and being able to go up into this pagoda thing. I learned a lot from this bike ride, such as; how to get to Erhai lake, where the temple is, how to get back 'home' from Erhai lake, and etc. Other than that today was a pretty chill day.

Today the highlight was probably having the laundry adventure with Grace and Kate.  We got the laundry started and it was all good, but one of the washing machines wasn't behaving and stopped for about ten minutes. So we took out the clothes early, but they were soaking wet. When we came back for them a couple hours later, they were still wet, we then tried spinning the water out, but the water started and we got very confused. They still are wet right now, but hopefully they will dry overnight. Another crazy adventure was terrace time.

Today was a pretty clam day. My favorite part was probably terrcnce time. We got to go to the Linden Centre and just sit and be still for awhile. It was very relaxing and peaceful. I mainly looked at the sky and sunlight on the mountians. It was very fasinating on how fast it would change. I also really enjoyed just watching the farmers harvest their rice. Another intresting thing was watching the children come home from school in different groups.

After we went out into the town and ate lunch, we ate this really awesome fired potatoes and the Baba. It was AMAZING. After we went on a hour of the town. We learned where a lot of stuff is. After it started to rain while we were learning how to use the washing machine. Then we went back to 'home'. After we were home we worked on our inquiry project.

Our group, Dynimite, meet for the first time on Auguest 22, 2013. It was super fun to meet these people, that before were just pictures on this website. They are all so nice and helpful. I learned so much more about Microcapmus and what we should and should not bring. I also learned what topic I wanted to do, what to expect, and eachother. I think this was a great oppourtunity to learn how to work together to do simple tasks together like ordering pizza. Over all this experence was very helpful because we are going to have spend 28 days together off in some small village.

Hi, my name is Chuli and I'm 14 years old. This will be my fourth year in Shanghai, but before I lived in Shanghai I lived in Dubai for eight years. I was really excited to be in XiZhou for Microcampus! I love learning new things and expand my prior knowledge. I learned about microcampus in 6th grade when Mr. T told us about it and from then on I really hoped I got to go. I loved to be able to do school beyond the school walls.
