Many students at Shanghai American School have not experienced life beyond the fortunate environment that we take for granted. However, I was lucky enough to be given a chance to go on Microcampus, which is a trip to Xizhou for 28 days to learn beyond the classroom. I have just arrived in Xizhou, and I am look forward to further experiencing rural China, bonding with my friends from school and with new people I meet, and learning new things about the country that I live in. The inquiry project is one of the main focuses of the trip and it will allow me to do all of these things.

So far in the inquiry project, I have completed Phase 0, which allowed me to select and briefly explore my topic. I began by selecting three topics of interest, and then choosing to extensively study the topic that interested me the most. My selected topic is child rearing in Xizhou. I plan to study relationships between parents and children, as well as the morals that children are taught at home. I would like to do this by interviewing and observing various families.

I have now finished both Phase 0 and Phase 1 in my inquiry project process, for which my topic is child rearing in Xizhou. In the previous phase, I composed a list of questions that will help me conduct my research once I arrive in Xizhou. This phase will help me find credible resources that I will use while researching.

About This Learner

Hello! My name is Annelise, and I'm currently a high schooler at SAS Puxi. I'm from California, but have lived in Shanghai for over 10 years. I took part in the Microcampus program in September-October 2015 in Xizhou, China. I gained so much from experiencing the simplicity, the people, and beauty of the village. For my inquiry project, I chose to study child rearing practices in Xizhou. The connections I made, people I met, and lessons I learned in Xizhou will never be forgotten. I welcome you to follow my learning journey to see how my ideas progressed over the course of the month!
