Heon L. (Alumni-M)'s Journal

Before this trip, I wanted to come to Microcampus because I wanted to see my limits, and I wanted to try to see what I could learn about the world outside of Shanghai. Now I truly know why I came to Microcampus. Now I have come to understand that I came to Microcmpus to understand the Chinese culture better, and that not everywhere is like Shanghai. I also believe that we came here to learn life lessons. Some of the life lessons I learned was that the last 15% is not extra work, and to never procrastinate.

Today I went on the hike. It was really tiring, but I gained a lot from it. I felt myself growing a stronger bond with my fellow Microcampus student, and I was really glad that I got to come to the hike. I wish that I was able to do the 3 days hike because then I would have been able to learn about myself better. When we got to the top, the scenery was really beautiful, and I felt really accomplished. When coming down, we did take a 10 minute detour, and it was a little bit more tiring, but I really loved the hik today.

I am really glad because our work is almost done. Tomorrow in the morning, we will work on our service learning and inquiry project, and we will be mostly done. We are going to show our service learning project at 3 PM. After that I will be completely finished with my service learning. I am also almost done with my inquiry project, and I believe that I can finish it by tomorrow. I really hope that I will be finished with everything and have a fun end of the trip

Today I have finished my final product for my inquiry project. I have not actually put my final prodcut online on my final product space. I have also finished my reflection for my inquiry project. I am feeling really great because I never thought I would see this day. Me finishing my inquiry project. For my final product, I had another review with Mr. Tafel, and he still gave me some things to work on. Now I think that my inquiry project will be really great.

Today I had my 10 AM review with Mr. Tafel. The review helped me a lot because he gave me a whole page of things I could change. I believe that this will help my project get better, and I am really excited to work more on my inquiry work. I am almost done with my inquiry, and I can not believe how fast time went. I am really sad how fast this is happening. I hope the future Microcampus students have a great time like me.

Today was a normal day, except for the fact that we had to make our own schedule. We built our schedules around our pitching in/service learning time. This was because I had to work on service learning with my group, and not by myself. It was really tiring because I felt like I had to get at least 3/4 of my project done. I still did all I could, and I am really satisfied with that.

Today was a really rainy day. I rained for the whole day, and it was really cold here. Everybody was wearing tons of layer. Vincent was even wearing 5 layers. Some of the restaurants were closed because of the rain, and I was sad that it was closed. I really did not like the rain, and I hope it is sunny tomorrow

Today, Kayla, Jamie, and I were doing our wellness when we saw an old woman who needed our help. We still had time for our wellness, so we decided to help her. I pulled the cart, and the girls helped push from the back. After we reached where she wanted to she was really grateful, and offered us an umbrella, some tea, dried papaya, and apples. We tried not to take it, but she kept insisting on it, so we took apple.

Today was the end of Phase 3, and I was really nervous because I thought I would not be able to finish it. Everybody was doing their own thing, and nobody really talked to anyone since we had to finish our Phase 3. I was really mad during the middle because everything I had worked for, for an hour was gone. I had to redo everything, but luckily it was easier the second time. Although today was a really nervous day, I was really happy because we had Mr. T's Whizz bang All Star Super-Duper Trivia Night.

Today, while I was eating my dinner, it rained outside. There was nothing special about that, but the cool thing was that there was a double rainbow. It was really cool how I could see 2 rainbows at once. It was really interesting, since I had never seen a double rainbow before. I feel like it was a really cool experience, and I wish I can have a awesome day for 10 more days.

Today was the first official rain day in Xizhou. It started out as a small drizzle, but in a minute to two, the rain was pouring heavily. While observing the rain, Isabelle and I noticed yellowish circular erosion surfaces on the ground. It was then when we saw that water was pouring down from a certain part of the roof due to the structure of the roof. This made me realize how old Yang Zhuo Ran was, since this erosion surface must have taken decades to be made.

I have been in Xizhou for 14 days now! That is half of the Microcampus trip. As I am working here, I can see some differences between Shanghai and Xizhou. The habits of people, culture, etc. These differences are very interesting, especially the cultural difference. Since Shanghai and Xizhou are both part of China, one might think that they are very similar, but actually they are not. The differences in the culture reminds me of the cultural iceberg.

Today I went to camping at Lake Erhai. I roomed together with Luke in a tent. It was a really fun experience for me, since I do not camp very often. When we got there, and it turned dark, everybody started sharing scary stories. I really loved the scary stories everybody told. Some were very scary, and some were not as scary, but I loved them all. Overall, it was really fun for me, and I wish I could camp there again.

Today, I talked with Mr. Tafel about my project. I had repeating information from my interviews, and I did not know what to ask people about. That was why I asked Mr. Tafel to help me. He told me a lot of ideas for my project, and I really appreciated him for that. Today, was another great day, and I am feeling really excited for tomorrow.

Today I went to a very old house with Jake. In the house, there were a lot of propaganda messages. These were from the time of chairman Mao. Most of these propaganda messages said "Long live chairman Mao". It was very interesting to see these propaganda messages because I could learn a lot from them. The best part was that most of these propaganda messages were still readable. Most of the propaganda from chairman Mao's days has been removed, but I think that I was really lucky today.

Today, I was the facilitator for the daily meeting. It felt really good for me because it made me more confident of myself. I was really nervous at first, but as the meeting went on I felt better. This was a great experience, and I am very glad I did it.

Today was officially the start of the second week. I have had a great first week, and I am really excited for this week. Today I went to a pharmacy to interview Mr. Yang. He was very nice, but did not give me a lot of information. Fortunately, Ms. Zhang knew a lot, and so we travelled from place to place to see some of the wall propaganda. I feel like I have made good progress, and I hope I finish everything in time.

Today was day 9 of our Microcampus trip. Mr. Tafel was sick again today, so we went out at 1 pm to talk to people in the village. We were not interviewing or anything, we were just trying to find out about their lives when they were younger. This really helped me because I became more comfortable speaking to other people. Today was also the mid-autumn festival, and we went to the Linden Centre to see some performances and to solve riddles.

Today was Saturday. We got to wake up late, and we got to rest for a long time. We had to finish everything we were suppose to finish during the weekdays. Luckily, there was not a lot for me to finish up, since I did everything I had to during the weekdays. We were also supposed to have service learning from 1 pm today, but since Mr. Tafel was sick, we moved it to Sunday. Today was my first rest day in Microcampus, and it has really healed me.

Today, I felt like I was getting more and more used to Microcampus. Just a few days ago, I was really confused with all the schedule, and what I had to do, but now I understand almost everything. Before I came to Microcampus, I was really bad at time management, and I would finish things barely just in time, but now I feel more confident, and I can believe more in myself. This change has all happened in just a few days, and I am really excited for the change that will come to me.

Today, I went to see propaganda messages with Mr. Tafel and Jake. I saw many different propaganda messages from different generations. I saw some that were from Mao's time, and some that were put up recently. While walking around and looking at these propaganda messages, Mr. Tafel told me some of the history of China. It was really confusing at first because the power kept shifting from person to person, but in the end I got the general idea. Today felt like the real start of my inquiry project, and I am very excited.

Today I went to "The Old Town Snacks" to eat lunch. I heard that "Tai Fei Cao Fan" (Tafel Fried Rice) was delicious there, so I decided to order one of those. When I went there I remembered to make more connections so I jokingly asked the person there if I could make my own fried rice like Mr. Tafel, and if I could name it "Li Xian Cao Fan" (Heon Fried Rice). She said yes, if the fried rice I made was yummy, so I started to tell her what I wanted in my fried rice. Rice, egg, meat, tomato, onion, carrot, and a little bit of soy sauce. A little later, my fried rice came out.

Today was a beautiful and magnificent day. It was today, when we got to get our Microcampus bike license. It was also today when we got to ride the bicycle and go to Erhai. The view was very relaxing and I could assuage over there. At first, when we all got there, we were all trying to take pictures to remember the place, but Mr. Tafel said to actually experience the moment. He said look instead of just seeing, listen instead of just hearing, and in some cases taste instead of just eating. This was when I realized that I should sit back, and feel the moment.

Today, I got to tour around the place I was going to live in for the next 28 days. We toured great many places, but the thing that comes the strongest in my mind was when we all got to go to "Si Fang Jie". Before I came to Xizhou, based on what Mr. Tafel was saying, I thought Si Fang Jie was a restaurant. I was really excited to go there, when I realized Si Fang Jie wasn't really what I was expecting. It was even better! There were numbers of restaurants there, all which looked and smelled delicious. I went to one that was called "Yun Ge Xiao Chi".

It was finally the day I had been waiting for, for months. I was going to finally get to go to Dali. I got on the airplane, all set and ready. I got on the plane anxious, feeling the butterflies in my stomach. I was on the plane ready to have a fun plane ride. Talking to my friends, playing electronic games, etc. This didn't go exactly as I planned. I couldn't really play any electronic games because I left my computer and my phone in my hiking bag which was on the top. I could've gotten it, but I didn't want to disturb anybody. The only thing left for me to really do was to sleep.

It is almost time to go to Xi Zhou, for I am leaving this saturday. It just seems like yesterday when I was signing up. Now it is almost time to go, and although I am feeling the tiniest bit anxious, I am very excited. I can not wait to try out the local food, and have a great adventure outside of my "bubble". There, I have a strict schedule that I am in charge of. I hope I will not procrastinate, and manage my time wisely.

My name is Heon and I am 13 years old. I am from Seoul, Korea, but I have lived in China for 10 years. My hobbies are basketball, volleyball, badminton, swimming, and soccer. I was in Xizhou, and the weather was beautiful there. I was feeling exhilarated that I was able to participate in the pleasant experience. I was really curious about Xizhou and the Chinese culture, and I hope that I learned a lot more about the real China from the fabulous experience.
