Noah K. (Alumni-A)'s Journal

This is a question all of ourselves ask each other why am I here in microcampus or specifically for us in microcampus.I think I am here not because they think I am amazing at working and catch up easily but because they think I can lead, I can inspire and hold this team together.I  guess that is why this program chose me but I choose it for a different reason. I chose this program because I wanted change I wanted out of the same routine and I wanted an adventure.Thats why I am here the adventure the ups the down's I needed a rollercoaster and that was not back home.

Today was a normal working day but it was no normal day because it was Madeleine's birthday. It was fun annoying her with Happy birthday songs and the cake was fantastic but it was great I think we all needed a celebration. It was fun doing our normal birthday ritual which always puts everyone in a good mood.

Today was the day when we went on a bike ride from 10:00 till 1:30. it was hard not because of the length but that we kept switching bike because most of them were really hard to ride because they were so old. it was hard but I had fun we tried biking in formation's such as the v formation and the 2 and 3 formation. we even found a special place to go for a quick 20 minute spa. I found the trip really fun and amazing but I was worried about the work I had missed doing this. Luckily when we got back after lunch I was able to go and see my elder for my service learning project.

During that day we had to get up really early and  pack up and head down the mountain so we could go to the horse race for the annual 3 month festival. however what ended up happening was us missing the horse race which was kind of disappointing but I didn't mind to much because I knew soon we would be able to got to the food and I was starved. When we hug out at the festival for an Hour it felt like a African market people were trying to sell stuff everywhere the roads were flooded with people. They were selling popcorn and  cotton candy as well as watermelon and chicken.

We woke up early and  were heading for a hike up the nearist moutain for around 2 hours before the sun hit full fledged. It  reminded me of new Hampshire becaue it still had the trees the knotty  roots that scatter the forest floor. However the altitude wa killer we would go for a while then need a break. it was funny seeing mr.tafel's head turn completly red. we headed up not being able to complete the hike fully because when we thought it would end wee kept finding a giant turn.

Today was hard, we went  hiking up the mountain with full back packs for an hour which at the time seemed insanely hard. Sweating taking layer by layer off so we wouldn't sweat as much but it still was hot. after we finished it felt good to finally say we had done it and that we made it to the sight but them we had to unpack and pitch up our tents for a nice restful evening.

Today was just kind of a normal day it was just us working. we were doing or work but we had to prep for our hiking trip. we had to pack our stuff and we had to  finsh work so we have everything done. I was just nervous about the huge hike that we had to do.

I spent the morning of  sunday just chilling with my parents hanging out eating breakfast. this day was harder because this is the day that most of the parents were leavingso we started returning to our  normal duties and started to get ready to work. which was harder because it felt like my normal life was back which I wanted despritly but things are what things are.

the next day we went with our parents and gave them a tour along with Brian linden. He showed us past stories of the village and horror stories, along the tour he showed us this interesting man named mr.dong. Mr.dong  was this amazing man who loved  to learn he had been through so many hard things in his life but he surpast it and he still loved learning and to me that was a great man.

For Day 13 we spent the morning working and an hour in the afternoon just on school work and normal stuff. At 2:30 or parents began to arrive  it was weird seeing them in our world away from shanghai. This had been a  different world to see them was weird at first but pretty soon everything went into place and everything went back to normal it became the beginning to our first weekend completely off and or last so we knew we had to make it count so to speak. so we at first spent the ret of the afternoon settling in and relaxing.

Today was a disappointing one. we ended not going to lake Er hai and we went to a textile factory about a 30 min drive. during the factory we ended up trying to sow our own  square cloths it ended up being very hard the women there were very talented. they could finish a whole butter fly by the time you finished half of the wing.

12 days. we have twelve days to finsh everything but after spending time actully planing out we have some full time work days but this can be done. It was good to get everything set and have the finsh line in sight . we have been planing for a long time and now we only have 12 days left. I have a lot of questions like how will life be like when we get back?I still keep thinking to myself what will it be like when this is finally done? how will this change me? well I guess thts we are all waiting for The Final Result.

Yesterday night when I was skyping my family I got a call. It was Mr Tafel saying that Mr. Yang (the fisherman) that I mentioned earlier had invited Mr.tafel and I an check on the nets and  when I was riding my bike there you could see the sun just setting. and the lake had fog over it and just in the distance I could see the outline of mr.yang. After we met him and he took us to his boat. we all climbed in and went out about 15 meters and  checked on his nets we ended up finding  about 7 or 8 fish in his net traps they were about the size as my pinkie to my thumb.

Today was just great. we got to sleep in to 7:00 which is always nice.I got to do a little school work but later on I got to meet some really nice and amazing local people.(side note: in shanghai a lot of families have the last name Chen but here they have a lot of Yang's)I got to talk about the lake and some fishermen that might be willing to take me thought their techniques and letting me get into their lives and learning what a true Xi Zhou local is like.

One thing that everyone talks around here is if we should be missing is our parent's. It makes you think should you miss them or not(no offense). I would like to quote something Mr Tafel said  "Parent's grow up twice once for themselves' and one for their kids" I thought about that saying and it makes sense they still have to learn to love, learn to let go and learn to grow up. That is what microcampus is learning to let go and grow up as well as learn about the Chinese culture. So that's just my thoughts in day 3, Noah signing out.

The fears that I expressed in my first blog have luckily begun to disappear. I have tried food here and started to like it. When we got here it was beautiful just like I imagined but there was a lot more farmland and the lake was more breathtaking than imaginable. On our second day we got to go to the lake on a bike ride. I remember being so thankful I get to spend a month just here in this spot gazing at lake. I am  getting to go fishing, make nets, catch fish and meet great fishermen.

The first day here we were riding on the bus. I remember looking out the window and just thinking that this doesn't  look like the pictures they showed us. All I could see was miles and miles of farmland and mountains. The gravel it's self was red with iron. I thought "This is it no turning back, this is it."I was nervously not afraid but nervous I mean leaving your friends your family your life to go and experience something you never have seen or felt before. It was hard to do this.
