Alexander W. (Alumni-L)'s Journal

At fist I thought my goals we to go out of my comfort zone and to learn new things, but I realized it's much more than that. In microcapus you are a part of a team, everyone has to work together or they're going to have a bad time. I think you don't just have to be able to be smat you have to be social. You have to be social to get along with both people in the group and out so you can connect with the people outside of your view. Because they are the once you won't always be able to see all the time.

When I saw my service learner partner, Mr. Zhao, watch our video about him I could see the expression on his face. Going through different emotions of pride, regret and happiness It defiantly was a different experience. I felt both happy and scared for what we did because I was scared that he might have not like our video and I was happy to get to know people I could have just walked by with no expression.

Today was the start and the end of phase four. In phase four we create a sort of outline to our final project. So when we start phase 5 or the final project we are prepared to present and type with barely any problem. We first look at other projects and get a sense of what we can do. We then talk about what our thesis in the clothes hanger and clips example we are suppose to use in our final product.

Yesterday we had a genetics hosted by Mr. T. It was very interesting and we learned a lot of things. We first started with an example from the Tafel family line. His Great uncle was born with the Tafel name, but a person told him when he was about 65 years old that Tafel was not his real last name. He later grew distant and essentially left the family. A few years later when Mr. T when on the lee side of the family he heard the story about his great uncle. After some searching around he found out that he had a son, Mr. T’s 2nd cousin.

Today I got my hair cut at Mr.T's Barber, Mr. Zhang. He works on the street to Si Feng Jie. He only gives haircuts to men because it is easier to do. So far he has already given a hair cut to all the boys except Jack. It's surprisingly relaxing and I feel a lot lighter. The only bad part is that when he finished he left a bunch of my hair on my shirt and pants. Although that was irritating it was the best five-Yuan I've spent. I also got to dig for some garlic during SAS essentials because I was suppose to make a commercial for a healthy food for health class.

Yesterday at night a legend became true. The legend was about a “handsome” young room inspector that got his left face burn to beyond repair. Now he is said to roam around Xizhou inspecting the rooms of young Microcampus students. He is the phantom of the room inspection. His first check was with room 2 where the female students at Microcampus dwell. In song he sang out the score of room 2 “the girls of room two on a five point scale get a score of 4.25 ”, sang the phantom of the room inspector.

We had to check if it had a rain cover and if it had all 12 steaks that were strait. If not we would have to if the bet steak to Mr. T withthe tent bag so he can straiten the steaks and move on. Xizhou has a lot of different religions in its area. From Buddha to Muslim. Xizhou used to be a part of a smaller dynasty or self run city state. At that time it had no formal religion and it stayed like that for a while. When the khan empire rose to power the over took the small city state. Due to some complications the khan empire sent some corporative people to down the resistance inside the villages. The people that they sent to stop the resistance happened to be Muslims and they spread their religion to the village and most people started to follow religion.

On the last day of the hike we started to our climb back to Xizhou. When we were about to leave the camp site or farm. Mr.T told us about how most people inside the "bubble" notice less about the things happening outside of us because we can't stop. I started to relize this when we went down from the mountain. For example; The birds chirping, the sound of the wind and the leaves russtling. While we got down we went back to our daily schedule.I began to relize this and I hope I can get to notice the other things even when I get back to shanghai.

Today we reached to xiao hua dian ba and had some well needed rest. After we had some rest Alex L., George and I prepared for the hike to baldy. I was an intense hike and it was really challenging. We took about 20 minutes to get to the top and the scenery was amazing. we built a small rock pyramid at the top to signify our achievement and I took this picture. The top was really windy and I couldn't hear anything. We could see the village we stayed at on the first day and the trail leading to it. It truly was astounding and breathe taking.

Today was the beginning of the three day hike. The morning started pretty normally. We had our breakfast and we packed our bags. Once we got ready to go we packed our lunch for the day and we went off for the mountain. The bus ride was not that long and we were all excited for the journey ahead. Once we got there we had a ten hour hike ahead of us. We started off with a 15% incline hike for about 3 hours. The first part of the hike was mostly mule trail which was interesting because most of the track had one part which was where the mules walked and another which separated the steps.

He said that the fish are there to keep the water clean. If the fish die then the water would be toxic and they won't be able to use it anymore. He talked some more about the well and it was very interesting, but we had to leave. He later invited us for some be, but we politly declined.

The time I had in microcampus is already wonderful and enjoying. I have already received our cycling license, visited the tie dye factory, went on the pagoda/temple hike and played ma jiang, and learned to set up the tents.  I can't wait for the next week and further.

Today we finally got our HRM straps from Ms. Mai. We learned how to use the watch and I think the watch is better than school. Once we finished with that we started working on our inquiry project in Xizhou. After that we got to get our bicycle lessons we also gave us empowering life lesson. For example; giving yourself space in biking is like giving yourself options in life when you make a plan or taking risks can cause ripple affects on others other than you.

I have already completed microcampus. During my time I have learned many things. I would definitely say this was a life changing experience. Recommendations for future microcampus students is to be on task, be on time, and follow Mr. T's directions.
