Noam B. (Alumni-J)'s Journal

Today was our last full day in Xizhou. It was mostly all about finishing up, saying our goodbyes and packing up.We woke up in the morning and started a normal day. In the afternoon at 2PM we had a meeting to give a review on trip advisor for the Linden centre. We all gave a five star review to show our appreciation for what the Linden centre has done for us. After 2 we finished up a few journals and then I left with Caleb to go say bye to a fisherman he had met. We took a 10min car ride due to the rain.

Max and I went to get Mr.Yang at 2:45. We got back at 3:00PM and started the showcase. After 2 groups had gone and Mr.T said his thanks and gave a little speech it was our turn to share. All went when when all of a sudden Mr.Yang's phone rang.so we were forced to pause the movie while he made a quick phone call. Other than that he said he really enjoyed the video and that he said it was really relieving when he saw his friends there too.

At 7:00PM today all the boys met in the TV room with their sleeping bags for their night in. We had planned a sleepover in the TV room.  WE set up a movie and made a comfy space to sleep. I uploaded my inquiry project up to the Microcampus website and then relaxed to watch the movie. We spent some time on our laptops and went to sleep at about 10:30PM, even the girls were jealous when they got back from their night out. We also hung out with Bryce however, he rejected our offer to sleep with us in the TV room. We had a great time and it was a fun time to relax.

Today was our final day for inquiry. We finished up our projects and showed them to Mr.T in the afternoon for a review. We then did some final adjustments and finished our reflections, then it was time to post. We changed our inquiry project state to request teacher review. 4 people of our group also spent endless hours to make our service learning videos perfect. I would like to thank Kristen F. for adding subtitles and editing our video.

A few days ago a few of the boys were playing with Bryce's hacky sacks, however somehow Max got it onto the roof. Today Mr.T built a contraption to go get the hacky sack. He tied a shoe to a cord which he then threw onto the roof to try and get the hacky sack. Nonetheless that did not work out. so We were forced to ask a guard to get on the roof somehow.

Today's Saturday, yay! However we do have some work to do. Again the boys woke up early today to eat all the good food before the girls got here, just like every weekend.  Then Mr.T and Bryce gave us a few tips for while we were out filming our service learning. At 10:00AM we were on our laptops typing, editing or creating.I finished a few things on my keynote and looked at my previous journals to check for errors.

Today I put my plans to reality. No not big plans, just plans about how I was going to be able to do everything in house for the next week or so. I decided that today I would be interviewing Mr.Linden at 4PM today other than that I have to eat in house for both meals for a few days but other than that nothing much has changed. I filmed a daily video shutout today where me and Diego gave a little tour of Yang Zhuo Ran, go watch that right "here" (hyperlink available once video is posted). A few of use have been homesick or a little down these past days.

Today everyone came back from the hike with a not so happy face. A few people in our group (including me) have not done anything for the good of the group for a pretty long time. We have either made people feel bad or injured ourselves because of our previous acts. Today was about changing, changing pretty much everything. Like Mr.T once said accidents never happen, they are just consequences. During out talk Mr.T drew a picture. One perfect line and a line that started of the same but as it went on the gap got bigger.

during breakfast today Ms.Mai announced that Hannah would be returning to Yang Zhuo Ran due to struggle with hike and an injury. We planned to go pick her up at the temple at about 11:00AM. A cable car was the only access to the temple for me so I thought it would be great to experience the nature on the mountain. I was excited and hoped it would help me with my science journals. However after having bought tickets we arrived to the entrance and were surprised to see Hannah and Ye ling waiting there. Apparently they had misunderstood and had taken the cable car down before we went up.

Today was possibly the worst microcampus day in the history of microcampus. The day went perfectly until after Lunch. Isaac,Diego,Caleb and I had a great game of basketball. On our way back we had a problem. We were riding behind some sort of tuk tuk when all of a sudden, it stopped to turn right.

Today was a regular day for the jailbreak group. In the afternoon Isaac,Caleb and I went to the market to get some gloves and exchange some money. It took us some time to find gloves that were comfortable and that fit us. We also got Caleb a wallet as he was using his jacket pocket. At the bank we exchanged our food allowance, I got ten 10RMB bills while Isaac and Caleb got twenty 5RMB bills.

Since today has been a rather regular day I have decided to make this journal post about Xizhou in general. The first thing you notice about Xizhou is that it is rather small. The people here are all friendly and always have a smile on their face. You can walk into anyones courtyard and start talking with them, the lives of people here are really interesting. Many walls in Xizhou have propaganda from the cultural revolution, a lot of house hold motto's are wiped out and have messages about Mao on them. Furthermore Xizhou is peaceful and quite.

Today was our first regular weekend. I woke up at 8:30 with the rest of the guys. We stuffed up on food and waited for the rest of the group to finish breakfast. Later on we had a history lesson with Mr.T. We started in 1911 and ended with recent events. I learnt a bunch about the cultural revolution, with this information we will be able to have more deep conversations with the elders in the village. After lunch we went out in the village to make connections with elders. Our best conversation was with Mr.Mu.

For science class, we are required to write three earth journals while we are in Xizhou.I chose to study the hydrosphere, the sector involving water, and the biosphere, the sector dealing with live organisms. After only 7 days here I have already seen many things relating to these two spheres.

Today the boys planned their first morning run. We woke up at 6:00AM and left at 6:10. We ran for about 30min with our head lamps on. The stars were amazing and it was great being out in the village before the craziness of the day started. We got back to Yangzhuoran at about 6:40 which left us some time to take a shower and get ready for the day. At 7:30 we were with the rest of the group eating breakfast. We then had a regular day with SAS essentials and everything else. However today I was taking notes for the meeting as I would be hosting the next meeting.

As we woke up in the morning we looked at the calendar and realized that our days were becoming busy but also more flexible. We also had our first meeting where we talked about SAS work and committee, we also figured our who would be hosting the next few meetings. Afterwards we had meetings with Mr.T and Mrs.Mai about our committees'. We were also announced who would be eating in house for lunch and who would be going out.

Surprisingly I woke up 10 minutes before my 7:00AM alarm.  I got dressed with amazingly comfortable and warm clothes and headed off to breakfast with my room mates Isaac and Sean. Then as I walked out of the room I got the news that we were on dish duty. After finishing our food we headed to the kitchen to start the dishes, this took us about 50 minutes as we had 16 of everything to wash. Then Ye Lin, the travel curator gave us a proper tour of Yangzhuran which was then finished off by Mr.T talking about emergencies.

So today I woke up at about 4:30 in the morning, got dressed and did a few last minute packs. After some hugs and kisses I hoped onto the car with my mom. I arrived at the airport at about 5:00. I joined my microcampus groupmates who had arrived mintues before, they told me where to put my bags and gave me a few other instructions. Later on we took a group picture, apparently it was bad but thats what a microcampus picture is. We said bye and were off with everyone praying that their suitcase was under 20 kilos. With the exception of a flashlight in our suitcases, everyone was fine.

Hey world, my name is Noam. I am a 13 year old born in France. When I was 4 months old I moved to Beijing and lived there for 4 years I then moved to Shanghai and I have been living there ever since. However I have only been going to SAS Pudong for the past 3 years. I have a brother in 5th grade and my mom is one of the health teachers at SAS Pudong. I love playing all sports but my favorites are touch rugby, soccer and basketball. My profile picture may seem like a mistake to you, your wrong. I chose this picture because over this trip it was not just about me, it was about everyone. Microcampus was the best experience I have ever been on. I learnt so much and had so much fun.
