For my service learning project, please refer to Sara's workspace.
My service learning partner is Mr. Yang. He is a 73 year old man who lives near SiFangJie. He is an antique dealer.
I learned a lot about him, not only about his life now but his life before. He told me about how difficult life was back in his day and all the chores he had to do to support his family.
I learned how much Xizhou was affected by big historical events and how much they impacted life here. It also tells me how lucky I am to be able to go on this trip an experience all these things.
Some reccomendations I have for future microcampus students are that you should go out everyday and have as many options as you can, because if one person ends up not wanting to film, you should be able to go straight to the next person. You should also get more film than you think you need. When you are filming, make sure you can hear what they are saying, because outside noise is pretty loud in the clip, and make sure you understand what they are saying so later when you translate it is not very hard to translate it.
The experience I had while sharing the video with our service learning was great. Since we were not watching our video but watching our audience, I could see him laugh or say something to his buddies sitting next to him. I could tell that he was pretty happy he did this and he could share this with his friends. While our group was walking him home, he said that our video was the best and that he was proud of us.
