My Service Learning Gorup consists of three members, Mark, Peyton, and myself. Our Service learning partner is the joyful Mr.Li who owns a restaurant in Si Fang Jie

Below is my reflection on this project...
What did you learn about your elder as a result of this experience:
• After this experience I learned that Mr.Li is one of the happiest men on earth. When he was young he worked very hard as a soldier and a construction worker for many years and now all that work has paid off for him. He is now retired and owns a restaurant had two children and a 20 year-old grandson, from my perspective that is a very happy retirement.
What did you learn about Xizhou's history as a result of this experience?
•I learned that during the cutural revolution life was not so bad for some people as long as they did their work. Also that after the reforms life was extremely easier for everyone, according to Mr.Li "there was fish and meat for everyone" which made Mr.Li very happy.
What did you learn about 20th Century Chinese history as a result of this experience?
• I learned a lot about how the Cultural Revolution and the Reforms effected peoples lives. After the reforms everyone became equal in social status and life became easier for everyone. Fish and meat was avalible all the time which was deeply apprieciated by people like Mr.Li.
Describe the experience of sharing your final video with your Service Learning partner--please copy/paste this as your daily journal.
•It was really interesting to see how all the elders reacted to the videos we shared with them. Mr.Li's video went first and it looked like he was very proud to life story with many of the other elders in the village. He smiled a lot and laughed with Mr.Zhao because of some of his answers to our questions. Like the constant mentioning of how he loves to watch tv. I think this video had a positive impact on everyone because it showed how happy Mr.Li has been all his life even through hard times.
•After the video's were done being shared Mr.Li thanked us warmly and showed his apprieciation and we then thanked him for getting up from his nap and missing his tv show. We also gave him a small present to show our apprieciation for participating in this activity.
What recommendations do you have for future Microcampus students who will be involved in a Service Learning Project?
•It is very important that you create a warm, friendly friendship with your elder Service Learning partner. By doing that the interview will be not as awkward and you will enjoy it much better.
•Pick someone who is very joyful and friendly and does not mind talking about his past, because otherwise the interview will be quite hard.
•While you are interviewing your Service Learning partner try to be creative with it make a conversation and let the elder talk about his life and let him/her tell stories. That way it will be much more interesting than a normal question and answer type interview.
• Have fun with you Service Learning!
