Nick J. (Alumni-B)'s Journal

Today was the last true day I think of Microcampus. Today started out with me being sick. I was pretty much immobile for the entire morning. As time went on, I felt better and finished up some final work. It was a decent way of ending my Microcampus experience.

Truth be told, I didn't really want to go on Microcampus. The only reason I wanted to go was because my mom wanted me to do it and my friend Maribel did it the first year. As time went on, I grew more attached to Microcampus because no matter how hard I complained not to go, nothing would happen. I finally came here and enjoyed it. It was an amazing experience, I want to come back here again for vacation.

At the presentation that we shared with Ms. Duan, we started off by giving her a brand new pair of 50 kuai earrings. I could tell she apprectiated them because halfway through the presentations, I saw her wearing them. that made me feel happy because I bought the earrings without any help. That means I can chose decent jewelery!

Today, or should I say tonight, we stayed up late to try and catch a glimpse of a shooting star. What happened was we went to bed and woke up at 2 in the morning. I woke up to Yifei yelling to Mark to turn of the alarm, not the alarm itself. In the end, I did not see any shooting stars. Hopefully if we do it again I see some!

Today was April fools. I played funny prank on Yifei. What I did was I took a sceenshot on Yifei's mac and put in full screen. Whenever Yifei tried to open an application, it wouldn't work. It was pretty funny. Sorry about it funny.

Today was easter. I wanted to go to church, but we forgot to arrange that. The night before, Cass and I hid a bunch of alpineba around the campus. They were our "easter eggs". Some of the eggs were easy to hide. Others were really hard to find. P.S if a microcampus student is reading this, look down when you walk, find the rest of the eggs.

Today we spent a lot of time on service learning. What happens is that we go to an elder and interview them about a point in their life. We talk to Ms. Duan, the woman who gave me the flute, and we got some final information. Tomorrow I believe we are starting on making a movie.

Today is a big day. We started (and finished) phase 4. Phase 4 is the phase where we think about a thesis and phase 5. Phase 5 is the biggest. Best. Most important part of the project. Also mama T arrived. Mama T is Mr. T's mom and she is very nice. I also got an insturment from Ms. Duan.

At last, Phase 3 is pretty much done. All that has to be done is Mr. Tafels approval. I personaly cannot wait for the inquiry project to end because it felt like so much work. Well, that's the real life I guess. Cannot wait to see you all! p.s I am feeling a lot less stressed.

Oh my gosh. It is finally less then 10 days until we go home! I can't wait to have a room of my own again. I'm going to sleep all weekend. I deserved it after 28 days of hard work and the same people around me all the time. I like them, but 28 days is a lot with some people.

I think today can be known as the day that I, Nick J., has officially started to break down from everything in life. The simplest stress things such as I don't know how to solve a math problem started to come up that I could not solve. I just felt like the world was going to end. If you have any advice, please say so.

Today we went to Dali old town again. Yifei, Chris and I ate at a place called Good Fellas. Just another ordinary pizza place? Wrong! It had the best pizza, the sofas were like clouds and (wait for it, wait for it...) There was a mini indoor climbing wall! Yes, that's right. Small enough to not need any gear but large enoughhang from. It was something i think has epicness written all over it.

We are heading back to our home away from home. Today our hike was much more pleasant than the first hike. Before I talk about the hike, I should talk about the night. We woke up in our tents to see frost outside and temperatures under 0 degrees Celsius. Anyway on our hike back we enjoyed a beautiful day with no clouds and a gentle breeze to keep us cool enough in the heat. Once we were almost down from the hill we encountered another school group from Shanghai. I thought it felt nice to see other kids my age that are not in microcampus.

Today we went up a very steep mountain and past 10,000 feet. It was a challenging hike because not only was the mountain steep, the rocks were loose and I fell and scraped a knee (not that bad of a cut). Once we got to the top, there were winds that were so powerful, it made yesterdays 45 km/hour winds feel like a breeze. It reached up to 51 km/hour! This made me feel like I was flying in the air! Also we climbed an extra 50 meters to reach the height of 3,232 meters. The air is so thin and the wind was blowing hard at you, it felt like we were climbing 500 meters.

Whoever made the phrase, 'it's the journey that matters', then they never been on our trip. It started with a nice trip up the side of a mountain, with fresh air and green plants all over the place. We thought the first half was hard by walking up an angle of 20 degrees, but it was nothing compared to the second half. Our first problem was we had to duck under a tree to stay dry from rain. This made me feel a bit insecure because it started to go from rain to sleet. It stopped after 5 minutes. Than we encountered winds that go up to 45 km an hour. It felt really cool, nothing else really.

Well, it is a big day for math. Today we start the quadratic formula. I had lots of trouble because I had no idea what so ever of what to do. After half an hour of struggling, Sujin and Clara came to help me.  After one or two problems I got the hang of it. If you guys get the time, please give them a big thanks for helping me. Thanks guys!

Random question: How is there a gum called bubble gum flavored bubble gum?

update: I will not have internet for Friday and Saturday, so do not call me or text or Skype or anything please.

Today was a half day outing to Shaping (no, I did not mispell shopping). Shaping is a place where there are no tourist and you can buy things from toffy to sausages that can range from 1.5 kaui to 10 kuai. I thought that this trip was better than Dali old town and we should come here again. Also today, we got code names for walkie talkies. For example, Chris is little girl, Mark is Magic Marker, and I Nicholas is Nicholas Cage (see what I did there?).

To start the day, Mr. Tafel came to check on our moon sketches. A moon sketch is when we draw the moon and write some observations. The observations include such as the degree in the sky, the phase, the date and the time. Some people in the group failed to add all of those notes. I personally did and I am getting a free night tonight, WOOT WOOT!! I do feel bad for the rest of the kids who have to do two observations instead of one.

Today was the start of phase 3. Phase 3 is when we start collecting data for the next phase, which is believe it or not, phase 5! (really phase 4). Today I went to Ms. Liu's house. She is a 60 year old woman who makes little baby shoes. I asked her what she does in an earthquake, and she said that she just held onto something because she does not have to worry about the house falling. This is because in the house there are grooves and sticks that hold the house together. I was amazed at that, the fact her house simply cannot fall to an earthquake.

Finally, Sunday, a day where we came just relax and chill without anything. It's like Saturday, except without the service learning project. It feels nice to have a day without anything. No homework, no work, just watching movies, biking, and relaxing! Although, my room did do laundry today.

It's finally friday!!!! WAHOO!! Today started out by finishing up phase 2. I am officially caught up and ready for phase 3. That was the biggest sucsess of the day I believe. I helped YiFei with his project, which is ok by me! I think that today was a relaxing day overall.

Once again today was a blast. We had another half day outing to the tie-dye factory. What we did was we got a fabric and some string and neelde to sow together a flower or a butterfly. Once sewn, we would put ot in boling water. After that, we put it into a natural blue dye. Now we are waiting for it to dry.

I'm having a great time, except the fact that I am behind in my inquiry project. I need to finish my inquiry project phase 2 by tomorrow. I need to interview three more locals and I need to find a book at the Linden center about earthquakes. Well, I should start working!

Let me say this, I will not trust Yifei with my life. Today Clara, Yifei, Sujin, Vicky and I went on a boke ride and got lost. I was forced to take the lead and found our way out. It was fun in a way that we got to explore. Well, hopefully, Yifei will get us lost again!

Sploosh, splash! Today we went to a waterfall and lake to try out our hiking boots and our backpacks. After a nice hike we took the time to pick and drink tea leaves. I think today was a break day since we had no inquiry project or any WIPPI (Wellness, Inquiry Project, Picthing In). Over all, today was a relaxing day.

Today was a very interesting day. It started out with making pancakes and relaxing in the house. During luch we got some very nice fried rice, but then it started to rain. It was a nice drizzle that was worth watching. Now I am working on my inquiry project and we are about to eat dinner. 24 more days, going by so fast! :(

Ok, we've been in Xizhou for three days. What has happened? Our toilet clogged, I tryed new food, and I am reading a book about zombie survival. We barely been here and we've been having lots of fun. I can't wait for my inquiry project to start and have more fun.

Day 2:

We woke up at 5 in the morning because Yifei wanted to. Really Yifei? Anyway, we prepare breakfast, pancakes. After that we took a tour of the town. What I find amazing in Xizhou is that it’s not 2000 kilometers from my house, it’s not that I have more responsibilities than usual, it’s that fact that dentist use strange and unusual seeds for their patients.

Day 1:

After waking up at 4:30 in the morning, traveling in a plane to ride a bus after 7 hours, we made it to Xizhou. It’s dark and scary, partly because I played slender on the bus. We eat dinner and then go to bed. I am rooming with Yifei, Mark, and Chris. I haven’t been hit with the fact that we are here.
