The people in my group are Nike, Jason, Chris and me. We have decided to put our work on Jason's service learning page.
Our Service Learning partner was Mr. Yang. He is the owner of the Golden Flower restaurant and he is 54 years old. When interviewing Mr. Yang, we were able to learn a lot about him. We learned that he opened the Golden Flower at the age of seventeen and that it was actually the first restaurant in SiFangJie. He also told us that he loved growing all sorts of flowers which he did during his free time. Mr. Yang has two children, one son and one daughter. His son drives cars here in Xizhou while his daughter is a dancer in performances. We also learned some things about Xizhou's history through the experience. He told us that back in the past, Xizhou wasn't as beautiful as it is now today. He said that there were also a lot of new things in Xizhou that was not there in the past. He also told us that back in the days 10 RMB would be equivalent to a 100 RMB in present day. We were all very shocked by this information. Mr. Yang also told us about the Cultural Revolution. He told us that he remembered red bands that people wore around their arm. He also told us that in the past, people did not finish their education and that there were hard times when earning money. He told us that he opened the Golden Flower since it was a good way to earn money in the past since it was a very hard time.
Today we shared our final product videos with our Service Learning partners and they seemed very satisfied with what we had created. The presentations started at around 3:00 P.M. but Mr. Yang being a very busy man with a busy restaurant, he came a bit late. But he still was able to see the video that we had created and he seemed very happy about it. I couldn't really see his face since I was sitting behind him but I when I heard him laugh when watching our video, I could tell that he was enjoying it. I felt very relieved when I heard his reaction because I was unsure whether Mr. Yang would like what we had created or not.
Nike, Chris, Jason and I also gave Mr. Yang a gift today. It was a beaded, looping bracelet but he seemed to like it as he put it on. We were very satisfied with our work. When everything was done, we walked him to the gate to say goodbye. Everyone exchanged smiles and he told us to come to the Golden Flower before we left for Shanghai. I am definitely planning on doing so soon.
For the future Microcampus students, I recommend that they should have their Service Learning partner in mind before they start since it allows them to have more time for doing their project and they wouldn't stress out in the last minute. I also recommend that they take photos with their partners as memories are always good and the elders really appreciate it. Another suggestion would be to make sure you have a camera WITHOUT a timed limit of video. For our group, our first videos were about 5 minutes long each with gaps in the middle of them. One last suggestion would be to make sure you enjoy the time doing your project!
