Xizhou

I actually cannot believe that tomorrow we will be leaving and going back to Shanghai. I didn't expect Microcampus to go by so quick, but after getting to know this place better, I started to realize how quick time flies by. For the first few weeks being here, some days felt like weeks and others felt like months. But now, each day feels like only a few hours and then it's already night time. I am just really thankful for this experience and also for the people who have helped me with either my inquiry project or service learning. I really want to thank Mrs.

As I first arrived in Xizhou, I was very nervous and always thinking about what was happening in Shanghai and didn't really get out of my bubble. All of the previous groups said that this experience was a remarkable one, I didn't really concentrate at that thought at first but now I finally realize how incredible this experience is. I started to get the idea of wroking in a different way and not just sitting in a classroom and learn with our notebooks.

XizhouI was very nervous for the service learning presentation. I didn't know what Mr. Zhang was going to think about it but I really hoped that he would enjoy it. Mr. Zhang knew that we took a video of him but I didn't know if he would like the idea of us editing what he says in the video. After finally presenting the video about Mr. Zhang, my group and I went up to him and asked us whether he liked it or not.

XizhouOur service learning project is due today. Service learning is about 4 students going out to the village and interviewing a local person that is above 65 years of age. My group, finally finished our whole service learning project today. The person that we interviewed is Mr. Zhang and he is 79 years of age. He was very open on with us, as we asked many questions and he answered all of them very well.

Today was the last day for us to finish our inquiry projects. All the hard work of these three weeks will finally pay off. In the beginning of Microcampus, I was a little behind on my work so I knew that I needed to work hard in order to finish what I came here for. For the first 2 weeks, I have been working the full 2 hours in WIPPIS time to try to catch up and be on top of my work. I made it and I also got to explore Xizhou during that as did everyone else. I am actually done working on my final phase and I am proud for catching up with everybody even though if it was hard work.

Today was our last day to actually just focus on our inquiry project and I made a lot of progress. I finished my reflection and also got my 'Sharing My Learning" checked. Mr. Tafel told me what I needed to fix today so that tommorrow I will not have to rush to get everything done. I hope that I will hand in my work on time and make Mr. T happy with it.

Today my work group and I went to interview our service learning partner Mr. Zhang. He was very open and would answer whatever we would ask him. Mr. Zhang was originally a teacher, and knows how to can deal with middle school kids. We hope that we can get our service learning project done in time and that Mr. Zhang will come to our presentation.

Today, we finally started our Phase 5 or also called the Final Phase. I was so happy that I finally got to this stage of Microcampus since we have been working hard for already 3 weeks and then for the next 3 days, we get to share what we learned here in Microcampus. My topic for my inquiry project is small business case study, each of us needs to have 3 hooks that are related to our topic. My three hooks include the physical parts, the economics, and also the emotional parts. I am very excited to see what my Final Product will look like!

Today was when we had to finish up and wrapping up to Phase 3. During WIPPIS time today, all of us signed up for teacher support since it was the last day that we could talk to the locals. For my inquiry project time, I went to see Mrs. Zhang again about Ru Shan making. I went to see her one last time today since it is the last day we can work on Phase 3.

Today was a great success for us during our Pitching In time. Charlotte and I were going to find our service learning partner than we were sure of was not taken until Charlotte told me that the person who works at the antique shop was already taken by the Hailstorm group. We asked him if he knew anybody that is about his age and would be interested in working with us to do the service learning project. Unfortunately, he said that none of his friends would be interested since he said that they were too old and would not take part in it.

Milking a Cow

For today, it was not a usual day for me. I went to Mrs. Zhang's place at around 7 with Kailee and Nickie and we all went to try out milking the cows. At first, I was really not sure about the fact of milking a cow but as I tried, it was actually pretty fun. It was like nothing I have ever done before and I just wanted to squeeze it more since it was really fun to do. Nickie agrees with me on the fact that is was a very fun experience and wishes she can do it again. So in the future, I hope that I have a chance to do this at Mrs.

Today was the day that we had to leave the mounatins and say goodbye. I was kind of happy that we were hiking down since we got to go back to our normal bed in Yang Zhou Ran. I was also sad since this was the last time that I was every going to hike that high up on a mountain. It took us about 6 hours to hike down all the way back down the mountain from 3232 meters. That was 2 hours faster than hiking up since you don't need that much energy to hike down the mountain than hiking up. Tonight, I am going to become so sore and going to collapse on the bed right after I take a shower.

Today was much more easier than our first day hike. We only had to hike for less than 2 hours but then the whole journey was up the path. In my opinion, I actually feel really accomplished since everyone in Ignite group made it through all the ups and downs through the way. I actually can't believe we made it to 3232 meters up high! Tommorow sadly we will have to leave the mountains and hike back to Yang Zhou Ran. I hope that I will enjoy my time here and have a last day on the mountains before we all leave.

Today was one of the most tiring days of my life. We had to hike for 8-9 hours from Yang Zhuo Ran to the place where we were required to stop at the mountains. As we got to our destination, I couldn't move my shoulders at all since we had to carry a 10 kg bag (that's how heavy it felt like but it actually might just be 5 kg). As long as I have a positive attitude, tommorow will be much more easier than today. But, if I think that tommorw's hike is too easy, then I will over estimate it and it will be hard.

For science, we are required to write about a sphere that we observed here in the village. This assignment can help us look around and notice things that you can never see in Shanghai. For the week 2 science journal, I am going to write about the biosphere and how it is related to Xizhou.

Today it was Evian, Adeena, Nicke and my laundry day. Laundry takes about 20 minutes to walk to there since it is closer to the Linden Centre than Yang Zhou Ran. For the previous days, there has not been so much sun since there was a small thunderstrom, but for us we got lucky since our laundry day was a really sunny day. Last time that we did laundry, it took our clothes two days to dry since it was raining for the whole entire day and also we couldn't do anything about it. I hope that next time that we have laundry, it will be a sunny day like today.

Today for our evening activity, we had something a little different. We were divided into our work groups and had to compete against eachother. The game was basically those kind of games where we had to pick a category and pick how many points we were going to get if we got the answer.

Today is our relaxing weekend, for most of the time, we get down time and pitching in. What I'm going to do during this period of time is just relax for a while and also while doing that, clean my room and go to the bank. Weekends at Microcampus are pretty relaxing since we have a lot of down time. For next week's weekend, we're going to go on a hiking trip so for now, I am going to enjoy relaxing in YZR.

Today is our first weekend in Xizhou. The weekends are very nice since we get to sleep in late, also we get a lot of time to just relax since it's a weekend. Today we were suppposed to have a camping trip at the "Tongue" of Er Hai but it got cancelled since today rained a lot. Although we don't get to go camping, we still get to learn the steps of setting up a tent. I now am really starting to like weekends since we get to have a lot of time to relax.

For our Science class, we are required to pick either the lithosphere, biosphere, atmosphere, or the hydrosphere. For the past few days, I have been looking at previous Microcampus students final inquiry project. In this journal, I will talk about how I observered the parts of Xizhou and how they are related to each sphere.

Today it actually rained for the whole entire day. Unlike yesterday when it rained for only 1 hour, today the grounds were all soaking wet. We had to face more difficult challenges today since for wellness, it was raining while we were running. Since I have glasses, it was really hard for me to run in the rain while I had to watch where I stepped. The weather was much colder than a normal day, it was about 10 degrees colder than a sunny day. We had to wear a lot of clothes that made us warm or else we could've gotten a cold. I hope that tommorow will be sunny and a nice day.

There was a big thunderstorm and a mini Earthquake that happened near Xizhou. I didn't know until the morning since I slept through the whole thing. A lot of people told me that they woke up in the middle of the night and it was really loud. Even though the ground was really wet from the thunderstorm, I couldn't do anything about it since we had a whole day planned ahead of us. The most challenging part for a raining day is Wellness and showering.

Today was actually the first normal day for Microcampus. We have this program that's called WIPPIS. It is a time where we can work on our projects and also just keep calm for a while and not be that stressed. What WIPPIS stands for is "Wellness" which is basically exercise and getting fit, and after "W" is Inquiry Project, that is just where we work on our project and catch up with our work. Then, "PI" stands for Pitching In, it's a time where we get organized such as writing journals, cleaning up our room.

Today, was pretty much a regular day. We got a lot of time to catch up on our work such as inquiry projects. As some of the other students went biking, we stayed at YZR finishing our projects to catch up with the others. I think that today was a really good time to calm down and rest while working on work. I hope that in the future I will be able to be the same as everybody else with their work and have a good time in Xizhou.

Today was a tiring and busy day for us, we had a brief tour of what the village looks like and where to go. It was a very hot and dry day so then we had to put so much lip balm and also drink a lot of water. We learnt many different places that we could go for out still time and also where to go for laundry. Xizhou is very different from Shanghai since it is normal to say "hi" to the people on the street even if you don't know them. In Shanghai, people would look at you weird and think that there is something wrong with you.

Today was a very exhausting day for all of us. We had to go through many challenges and difficulties such as carrying our bags, the 6 hour bus ride. We learnt many things about what the expectations for Microcampus is. Always listen to instructions and be on task, also don't fool around when the teacher is talking. We always have to stick close together with a buddy and not be wandering by ourselves on the street lonely. I am very excited about Microcampus and the adventures that I will be experiencing on this trip.

Coming to the Pudong campus to meet the other half of the students was a great way to get to know eachother better. Some of us have never met eachother before so the activities we did during this lock in helped us to get know people's names and personality. All of us bonded together pretty well in my opinion, as we walked into the room, they welcomed us very nicely like we were already really close and friends.

Hi! My name is Claire and I was born in Connecticut and lived there for about 7 years. Afterwards I moved to Shanghai and lived there until now. Xizhou was a very nice place to explore and a great place to learn about culture. I hope that in the future that I can come back and visit this beautiful village!
