Phase 0: Getting Started: Topic Exploration and Selection

Updated 8 years 5 months ago

I'm doing embroidery for my inquiry project.

I can imagine lots of possible times when I can interact with the local people. Interactions with people working at embroidery shops will give me a chance to ask questions and inspect their work. I think I'll be doing a lot of that, because I want to learn how to do basic embroidery, what embroidery means to the local XiZhou people culturally, and the economics behing it all. I plan to visit an embroidery shop and talk to the people there, which will provide meaningful interactions in the village. I would ask them about their business in the village, why they decided to start their business in XiZhou.

I decided to investigate embroidery as my inquiry project topic because I'm interested in the process of embroidering (getting silk, about how long it takes to make a piece depending on its difficulty/size), but also to some degree the economic aspect of it (why is this piece more expensive than that one). I plan to do my project on mainly the process/creation of embroidery, and I plan to have a basic understanding of the making of embroidery by the end of this project. This topic is important to me because embroidery is an art form that I enjoy looking at, and I would like to try it myself one day.

Hi! My name is Audrey... I'm really excited about Microcampus. I've never been to an area like that, and I'm looking forward to the fresh air and nice weather. I hope to learn how the people there live, as well as exploring the area and comparing it to Shanghai. Hopefully, I'll gain a great experience out of this trip.
