Ultimate - Inquiry Project

What is an Inquiry Project?

All Microcampus students spend a significant amount of time each week devoted to investigating a topic of high personal interest that relates to the Xizhou area. Students actively seek and depend upon the wisdom of the people living in and around Xizhou to support their active investigation into their chosen area of interest.

During their exploration of one of the wide range of possible topics, students will be supported by a framework for inquiry that features the following four main phases:

    1) Posing Real Questions
    2) Finding Resources
    3) Interpreting Information
    4) Reporting Findings

The process is designed to be cyclical in nature, however, and will involve plenty of reflection, questioning, and reframing their research as new information is found. All student work will be made public during the research process online; it is hoped that readers will provide feedback to students during the research process and follow along as the students report their learning.

On November 18th, 2017, I will be leaving Shanghai with my Microcapmus team and staying in XiZhou for 28 days. During that time, we will be working on a project called the Inquiry Project to build our knowledge of the local culture. Before we were even selected to participate in this program, we were given a digital document on our laptop that lists all the possible choices for our Inquiry projects. As I scrolled through the list of topics, a series of questions popped up in my mind.

We were first given a list of ideas about topics we could research in Xizhou for the 28 days that we will spend there. I read the list that was given to me and I was interested in many topics, but we were given the instructions to pick out only three. I narrowed down the topics I was interested in by firstly, reading the list again and highlighting the topics I was interested in.

Over the past few weeks, I have spent time researching and narrowing down my topic of study at Microcampus. I have now started Phase 1 and will continue with my selected topic of local food and cuisine. In Phase 0 I did preparation for picking my topic along with research on Xizhou itself. I will now be covering some background knowledge as well and learning on what my topic is all about.

What I already know about my topic:

Microcampus is a great learning opportunity and journey for students to learn about life outside of the city.  I will be staying in a local village in Xizhou for 28 days with two teachers and 9 classmates. I will be investigating a topic of interest for the trip. I was given a long list of topics and I narrowed them down based on feedback. I am excited to explore food and cuisine during my stay.  Lots of work will be put into preparing myself for this trip.
