O.R.E.O. - Inquiry Project

What is an Inquiry Project?

All Microcampus students spend a significant amount of time each week devoted to investigating a topic of high personal interest that relates to the Xizhou area. Students actively seek and depend upon the wisdom of the people living in and around Xizhou to support their active investigation into their chosen area of interest.

During their exploration of one of the wide range of possible topics, students will be supported by a framework for inquiry that features the following four main phases:

    1) Posing Real Questions
    2) Finding Resources
    3) Interpreting Information
    4) Reporting Findings

The process is designed to be cyclical in nature, however, and will involve plenty of reflection, questioning, and reframing their research as new information is found. All student work will be made public during the research process online; it is hoped that readers will provide feedback to students during the research process and follow along as the students report their learning.

For me and the 11 other students going on the 28-day Microcampus trip in March, it is the beginning of a huge learning adventure. 12 'Microkids' from SAS Puxi 8th grade will be spending 4 weeks in a little town in Yunnan Province, China, called Xizhou. We will spend these weeks exploring a topic of high personal interest, and documenting our progress along the way. At the start of the process, we were given a huge list of topics---it had pages and pages of descriptors!

I have lived in Xi Zhou a town in Yun Nan with my peers for 18 days. In the course of 28 days we have all worked on an inquiry project which helps us learn more about the culture there and understand the people and create a connection with them. Below are the choices for my inquiry project and some questions I have about one of my choices.

This workspace is Phase 1, where I have posed real questions and discovered more in depth background knowledge about my inquiry project. Back in Phase 0, I had been doing a lot of decision making on which topic would become my final one. It was similar like a rough draft, since we were in the process of writing down our thoughts of our top choices, and constricting them to only one. To find out more about Phase 0, just click here.

In March of 2016, a group of 12 eighth graders went on a trip to learn and grow. These students traveled to a village in China called Xizhou where they lived for a month. We were given a wide variety of topics to choose from to study during our time in Xizhou. I soon narrowed the choices down, and picked my final choice of Textile Production, specifically Bamboo Weaving. Below is my work in which I updated before and throughout the trip about my chosen topic.
