Phase 4: Preparing to Share: Emerging Ideas

Updated 4 years 7 months ago

Thesis:

In order to gain a full understanding of the daily life of a girl in middle school in Xizhou, it is essential for one to investigate the schooling, dreams, and lifestyle of the children.

Main Audience:

My main audience for my final product is anyone who loves to be around kids, or misses being one. I also want anyone who is interested in what I hav accomplished while I have been on this amazing journey to take a look at my work. My goal is not to cherish my childhood memories here, but to create new ones.

Shared Information:

For schooling, I have visited the local middle school various times, gaining new information every time I came and went. As for the dreams of the children here, many aspire to study elsewhere in China or even the world. A lot of the kids have never been outside of Yunnan province but wish to travel. Young love is not allowed here due to overprotective parents who won't allow their children to date until after college. This is true in other parts of the world as well, but here it has gotten to the point where girls and boys don't really even communicate with each other. When it comes to the lifestyle here, I fully understand what a day in Xizhou looks like for a 13 year old girl.

Media I will use to get my point across:

I plan on using iMovie to create a visual for my audience to demonstrate what it would look like to be a 13 year old girl here, but instead of filming other girls in the village, I would be the one going to school, hanging out with my friends, and doing my homework. I want to pretend that I live here, and my life is completely different from how it is now. I learned a lot about my topic while I have been here, but I have also learned about myself, and that is what I want to share with everyone. This project is about my life here, and I am going to take the research I have and turn it into something digital.

Your iMovie?

Grace,
I am hoping to see your iMovie but can't find the link. I'll look again later in the week. I think your project evolved in a nice way. I like Mr. T's idea of the hanger with the three ideas "hanging" from it. Congratulations on reaching out to your "peers" in Xizhou--middle schoolers. The next time you are able to immerse yourself in another culture, you'll have another opportunity for comparing middle schoolers from there with those from SAS and Xizhou. Sounds like an inquiry project that could last a lifetime!!

Hi, my name is Grace! I'm 13 years old and I am now a Microcampus Alumni! I was born in the US and have been in Shanghai for almost 3 years now. I chose to study the daily life of children (especially around my age) in Xizhou. I deeply miss Xizhou and the fresh air, blue skies, and the loving people in the village. I am here as a reference for future groups, whether it be Inquiry, Service Learning, or anything else, I'm here!
