Phase 0: Getting Started: Topic Exploration and Selection

Updated 4 years 11 months ago

The two topics that interested me the most were: Local Food/Cuisine and also the new topic on Green Energy. First off, the local cuisine topic interested me because not only I am pretty open to try any type of food, I also enjoy cooking myself. The new topic on green energy also caught my eye because currently I am starting a project based on "Going Green" in my exploratory (Global Issues Network) and I thought it would be great to continue and learn new ideas that could possibly be used in back here in Shanghai. Not to mention how I would love to be the risk taker and be the first person to take on and try this project.

However, after having to narrow down to one inquiry project, I chose not to continue on with 'Local Food/Cuisine'  because I felt that the 'Green Energy' project would benefit and interest me more due to my current appeal to eco-friendly ideas and actions.

Being a lover for taking risks and a person motivated to stay eco-friendly, my top and final inquiry project choice was green energy. Currently I am in the GIN (Global Issues Network) exploratory and in the stage of developing an eco-friendly project that can be sustainable and helpful within the local area. Having this topic as my main project would then give me more ideas and information on renewable energy sources that I can bring back to support my project. Hopefully this topic will help me find out different, and possibly simple, ways to use wind or solar power to generate energy for supporting things such as lights. In the host village the people there can show me how the solar and wind power generators work to power the local city lights and how I could benefit and bring back my new learnt knowledge to Shanghai. Thinking globally about green energy, acting locally within Shanghai.

In phase 0, I picked out the inquiry projects that interested me the most and supported them with reasons of why they were appealing to me. However, to finish this phase I had to narrow down my topics to the one that interested me the most ('Green Energy'). Later on in Phase 1 you will be able to see me building and learning more background information on my inquiry project. As well as looking through previous microcampus alumnis' projects that may be benefitial to mine.

Hey, my name is Nicole and I am currently 13 years old. I was born in San Francisco, California and my parents are from Taiwan. Throughout my life I have moved 5 times so I am a pretty social butterfly. Leadership and taking risks are things that I feel confident at. Photography, dance, and swimming are my hobbies and passion. I had a very delightful time exploring new cultures on my microcampus experience in XiZhou and will miss it deeply!
