Phase 0: Getting Started: Topic Exploration and Selection
Finding a suitable Inquiry Project that interests us will be very important because we will asking villagers about our inquiry project for 28 days in a village called Xizhou. The quality and quantity of the preparation phase of our inquiry project will effect how much we learn when we reach to Xizhou. The inquiry project is self picked and is highly run by our own interests. We were provided with a list of topics and we selected our top three topics. Then we narrowed down to the final topic which we are going to spend a month communicating with the Xizhou citizens and learning. In addition, we got frequent feedbacks and checks in with Mr. Tafel to guide and help us in this process.
When I first looked at the inquiry project list and the completed projects from alumni, I was really interested in these three topics: Local Recreation/Hobbies, projects/business management, and local landforms/geology. I choose these three topics because I thought that all of them have a special connection to me and I want to learn more.
After looking at numerous alumni inquiry projects, the projects that really caught my eye was Hannah H.'s inquiry project from group C where she was trying to find out the meaning of happiness to the Xi Zhou's citizens by studying their hobbies. She found out that it was small acts of their hobbies that gave them happiness. I was really inspired, so I decided to create another inquiry project called Wealth and Money. I choose this inquiry project because I thought that many of us are very devoted to wealth and money, so we put these as our top priorities. When I am in Xizhou, I would want to talk to families that are wealthy and less wealthy to have a well rounded data. I would ask for their advices about how wealth and money impacts them and how satisfied or happy they are with life. I would add more questions during the later phases. I hope that after this inquiry project, I could learn about the relationship of wealth and money with being satisfied with life.
My first discard topic was projects/business management. This is a discard topic because my interest was focused on my inquiry project wealth and money. I also thought that this topic was very broad and narrowing it down would have taken a long time. So I eventually did not pick this topic.
The second discard topic was local landforms and geology. This is also a discard topic, because of my interest was mostly focused on my inquiry project about wealth and money. In this trip, whether or not I choose an inquiry topic with nature, I would still interact and experience nature. This could happen in our daily schedule in microcampus and also the hike. Out of all my previous reason, I did not pick this topic.
In phase 0, I have created and selected my inquiry project which is wealth and money. In Phase 1, I would be posing more questions and continue the journey of my inquiry project.
