Phase 4: Preparing to Share: Emerging Ideas

Before I came to Xizhou, I have chosen to study embroidery (Phase 0), a topic of high personal interest, and gained some background knowledge (Phase 1) and reliable sources (Phase 2). In Xizhou,  I have gathered information on embroidery from local contacts and experts evident in Phase 3. Here in Phase 4, I will create a plan to share what I have learned about the embroidered shoes here in Xizhou.

In order to gain a better understanding of what my final project would look like, I watched Stella R., Ryane L., and Miranda M,'s inquiry projects. Something I really enjoyed in Stella's video was how she incorporated a lot of her personal journey in silversmithing and Microcampus into her project. In Ryane's final product, she was able to include a lot of information on embroidery, but also managed to not make the video tedious and boring. Finally, Miranda's project showed me how the text could emphasize important information. 

What type will my project be?

Originally, I plan to show the change over time of the embroidered shoes here in Xizhou. But with the suggestions from Mr. T, I will also be incorporating my own personal journey in Microcampus in my final product. 

Who is my audience?

I expect my audience to be mostly future Microcampus students who wish to study embroidery as well. But aside from Microcampus, I think they will be English speaking tourists or students who wish to learn more about Xizhou before coming here. 

What is my objective?

Since embroidery is a dying art form, my objective is to inspire the audience to learn more about embroidery and, at least, keep the memory of embroidery alive. 

What will I be presenting?

The thesis statement of my final product will be: In order to understand the change over time of Bai Minority embroidered shoes, one must consider: the Min Guo time period (1912-1949), the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), and the 21st century and beyond.  Specifically, I plan to show the change over time of embroidery through three different pairs of shoes, representing the three different time periods. I plan to share my learning through a video including some of my photography. The reason I chose a video is so I am able to provide information through voiceovers. The reason I included photography was because as part of my Phase 0 work, I planned to incorporate some photography in my final product since it was always one of my greatest hobbies. 


I. Introduction:
  a. A brief background of what Microcampus is.
  b. How I chose embroidery because of my interest in art, and my initial expectations for what I will learn.
  c. Thesis statement: In order to understand the change over time of Bai Minority embroidered shoes, one must consider: the Min Guo time period (1912-1949), the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), and the 21st century and beyond.

II. The Min Guo Time Period:
  a. Background of what the People's Republic is.
  b. How wealthy people wore embroidered small shoes. 
  c. Popular Bai patterns and how it stood out from other minorities.
  d. How small feet and embroidery were a sign of beauty for suitors. Societies' expectations of what a woman should be like.

III. The Cultural Revolution:
  a. I chose Yang Nainai's modern shoes because it was greatly influenced by the Cultural Revolution and I feel it fits as a representation of this time period and its influences.
  b. Background of the Cultural Revolution.
  c. How abolishing feet binding influenced embroidery and a woman's place in society. 
  d. How the lack of education for women resulted in Yang Nainai's earlier retirement. 

IV. The 21st Century and Beyond:
  a. The rise of machine embroidery.
  b. How the machine embroidered pieces still contain parts of Bai traditions. 
  c. Happy Embroidery and how they hand embroider wall decorations due to the modern appeals. 
  d. Demands of tourists, and how it destroys parts of traditional culture.

V. Conclusion:
  a. Take away: with the fall of a tradition comes the rise of new opportunities and equality.
  b. Restate thesis statement.
  c. Wrap up.

Now that I have completed my plan for how I will share my learning, I will move onto presenting it in my Final Product.



Hello!! I just finished watching your final product and read your reflection. I really enjoyed reading it and I learned a lot about embroidery! Your project really intrigued me and I can't wait to learn more. I guess I could say that your project was pretty radical (that's the only time I'm going to say it)

I am Audrey T, an 8th grader from Shanghai American School. I have returned from a 28 day trip to Xizhou, and it was a wonderful experience! I will never forget the friendly locals and the stunning view. Special thanks to Mr. T and Ms. Mai for making this wonderful trip happen!
