Local Programming is provided by the Linden Centre, our amazing local partner in the process. One staff member of the Linden Centre is assigned specifically to work with the SAS Microcampus. In addition to providing support to the Inquiry and Service Learning projects, the staff member will develop a small number of half-day excursions in the area around Xizhou. These trips include visits to the weekly regional market, area festivals, small workshops, a local kindergarten, and a multi-day camping trip in the mountains.
Camping and Backpacking
One of the real highlights of the trip is the chance for participants to experience the breathtaking scenery in and around Xizhou. Long after their return to Shanghai, returning students recall the beautiful weather, clear blue skies, and amazing physical setting of their time in Yunnan.
In order to help students connect with the natural environment, they will be involved in a 3 to 4-day backpacking adventure, enjoying the thrill (and occasional soreness) of hiking around the beautiful, scenic terrain of the Cangshan mountains that surround the Lake Erhai valley. In addition, students will have many opportunities to have single-night camping excursions along the shore of nearby Lake Erhai.
